I think all the course texts we read so far for class all share a common link that connects one reading to another reading. With that being said the three readings I chose were the Pozner piece, McIntosh piece, and the Allen piece. I chose these three pieces because they are all mainly centered around the racism in today’s society. Many people think racism is a thing of the past but sadly this is not true. These three pieces help point out that racism is not a thing of the past and shows the audience how big of a factor racism really is in our everyday lives. Throughout this essay I will show how all three of these pieces are similar and are connected to one another.
The first piece I will be talking about is the Allen piece, which …show more content…
66). I agree with this definition because the first thing we notice about a person is there race, whether they are light-skinned, dark-skinned, or from a foreign country. Allen says “We use these physical attributes to assign an individual to a racial category” (Allen, 2011, p. 66). For example if we see a dark-skinned individual we will associate them as being African American. I think this is not good for society. Assigning individuals to the racial category that they fit into is only causing a bigger division between the races. This division can end up creating hatred between the races and could end up leading to a war. Allen also points out the significant gap that exists between whites and colored people in terms …show more content…
I think this piece mainly deals with the many racial stereotypes in today’s society. This article mostly refers to the different stereotypes used on the show America’s Next Top Model. Pozner (2010), suggests “America’s Next Top Model perpetuates damaging racist stereotypes, while superficially claiming to promote all types of individual beauty and to empower women” (p. 396). For example on the show asian women have been called “Dragon Ladies”, and “China Dolls” (Pozner, 2010). I think one of the stereotypes portrays asian women as being evil and mean, and another portrays asian women as being beautiful. While one of these stereotypes may not be that offensive, I still think it is wrong. I personally feel you should not compare a human to an object or an animal. Also on the show a young colored teenager was once called “Curious George” (Pozner, 2010). This stereotype is referring to the colored teenager as a monkey, once again comparing a human to an animal. In my mind this completely wrong and is very offensive. In the article I noticed there wasn’t any racial stereotypes regarding white woman or the white race. I think the reason for this is because there is a belief that the white race is over-privileged in
