I think all the course texts we read so far for class all share a common link that connects one reading to another reading. With that being said the three readings I chose were the Pozner piece, McIntosh piece, and the Allen piece. I chose these three pieces because they are all mainly centered around the racism in today’s society. Many people think racism is a thing of the past but sadly this is not true. These three pieces help point out that racism is not a thing of the past and shows the audience how big of a factor racism really is in our everyday lives. Throughout this essay I will show how all three of these pieces are similar and are connected to one another.
The first piece I will be talking about is the Allen piece, which

66). I agree with this definition because the first thing we notice about a person is there race, whether they are light-skinned, dark-skinned, or from a foreign country. Allen says “We use these physical attributes to assign an individual to a racial category” (Allen, 2011, p. 66). For example if we see a dark-skinned individual we will associate them as being African American. I think this is not good for society. Assigning individuals to the racial category that they fit into is only causing a bigger division between the races. This division can end up creating hatred between the races and could end up leading to a war. Allen also points out the significant gap that exists between whites and colored people in terms …show more content…
I think this piece mainly deals with the many racial stereotypes in today’s society. This article mostly refers to the different stereotypes used on the show America’s Next Top Model. Pozner (2010), suggests “America’s Next Top Model perpetuates damaging racist stereotypes, while superficially claiming to promote all types of individual beauty and to empower women” (p. 396). For example on the show asian women have been called “Dragon Ladies”, and “China Dolls” (Pozner, 2010). I think one of the stereotypes portrays asian women as being evil and mean, and another portrays asian women as being beautiful. While one of these stereotypes may not be that offensive, I still think it is wrong. I personally feel you should not compare a human to an object or an animal. Also on the show a young colored teenager was once called “Curious George” (Pozner, 2010). This stereotype is referring to the colored teenager as a monkey, once again comparing a human to an animal. In my mind this completely wrong and is very offensive. In the article I noticed there wasn’t any racial stereotypes regarding white woman or the white race. I think the reason for this is because there is a belief that the white race is over-privileged in

The article, “Size zero, high-end ethnic: Cultural production and the reproduction of culture in the fashion modeling,” exemplifies the high expectations of modeling for other racially models in ways that explain how producers in the modeling industry, weigh their decisions on two analytically liked issues such as body types and racial exclusion. Mears argues a valid point illustrating how darker skinned toned females that are chosen to walk in the runways exemplify the opposite to the normatively white female body. She states, “Content analyses of fashion media consistently show that darker skinned women have and continue to be posed and styled in exotic juxtaposition to the normatively white female body, if they are included in fashion at all” (Mears, 24). Colour of Beauty, mentions that African American…

On June 20th, 1943 fights between black and white teenagers broke out at Belle Isle Park, an integrated amusement park on an island in the Detroit River. The conflict quickly spread off the island with the help of rumors and began to plague the rest of the city. After two days of violence, 6,000 federal troops were sent into Detroit to deescalate the situation.…

I am writing this letter concerning an uprising issue with your digital library service. Recently, I read a novel, “Quicksand” by Nella Larsen, on your site and it made me realize that some parts of the novel are difficult to understand by an average reader. For example, an important theme, racism is used in many parts of the novel, and some of these parts require further explanation. So, therefore, I propose that you enhance your digital book by adding annotations to the text. These annotations could be glossary definitions, or researched descriptive annotations.…

Stereotypes play a vital role in today’s society, particularly in the misinformation of images. According to Webster’s dictionary, stereotyping is defined as a permanent conventional notion or conception of an individual group of people. Stereotypes form when a person makes a perception of a whole culture or a gender inside of a culture based on the actions, appearance, and beliefs of one person. Stereotypes can be both negative and positive. However, in the media, they use stereotypes to misrepresent, but are highly accepted among people in society.…

In my own personal opinion, this concept is tremendously racist. We are all the same inside, literally the same species. Although, not one individual is physically the same, compared to another. Just because someone looks like you, doesn’t mean they are like you. You can share the same skin tone with a person, but have a completely different outlook on life.…

This categorizing of people has been done since history has been written. The concept of race was a way to put people into groups and then later hold power over certain groups. Race has been the very thing that has caused wars and provided motive for acts as cruel as murders within history. Groups of people have been punished under this concept that people so heavily relied upon. Race has been an intricate part of history along with greed as a driving force in some of the choices that were made.…

Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

A social construct is an idea or that appears to be natural and obvious to the people who accept it, but may or may not represent reality. This means that it remains largely as an invention of any given society. In our world today many people see race as a social construct but it was once considered a biological process but we know that this is untrue. Through research it has been shown that there is no gene common to all blacks or all whites. If race were to be identified in a genetic way, specific racial classifications for individuals would remain constant across boundaries.…

Upon analyzing the readings for this week, two in particular stood out and intertwined the best to me. “Defining Racism,” by Tatum and “Wake up White People,” by Arminio related to each other well due to their messages about racism. I found that I opposed content in these passages greatly. “Defining Racism” was about how racism has a fluid definition that basically is an umbrella term for all mistreatment of those of a different ethnic background. The reading also noted that prejudice goes hand in hand with racism, saying that prejudice is what causes us to act deeper on the idea of racism.…

The readings taught me a few things. The first reading taught me that it is possible to have a conversation about race in today’s society. Race is regarded as a topic that should not be spoken of. This is because the topic can be very controversial However, in the article, Tatum explains how sympathizing with another person about racial issues is a way to start a conversation about race.…

Categorizing and identifying threat is part human defense mechanism which allowed humans to survive nature and evolve into the modern man. Identifying threat in nature allowed for better survival and by categorizing animals into dangerous or safe further improves the chances of survival. Unfortunately, this defense mechanism of categorizing and identifying threat in the modern world has shifted from animals to other humans. Describing someone based on their appearance is normal and it facilitates the recognition of that individual, but racism also developed due to natural tendency of humans categorizing subjects. In America, the land in which everyone is created equal, there is a clear evidence that equality between races may just be an ideology…

After I completed the “Sorting People” activity on the PBS: Race as an Illusion website, I was told that I had correctly paired 6 out of 20 people’s faces with their corresponding U.S. racial classification. These results were not entirely surprising. I often find myself categorizing others, whether it be by gender, ethnicity, race or age, but I recognize that I am usually wrong in these assumptions. I’m horrible at guessing someone’s age and, more often than not, I’m wrong when it comes to guessing someone’s race or ethnicity, as well. When you try to categorize others, especially by way of race, you’re forced to rely on a set of stereotypical features assumed to belong to certain members of certain groups.…
