The majority of the world experiences a range of conflict every day. The source of the issues can stem from family, financial, societal or personal; a problem will always appear. Another type of conflict a percentage of the world goes through is discrimination. Seemingly, everyone of every race, ethnicity or origin is treated equally. The reality, racial discrimination is still prevalent. Overt racism such as African Americans sitting on the back of the bus or not being able to eat at certain restaurants no longer happens. However, even as a young African American male, in 2014, I experienced this situation. Many make an assumption about me. Others looked at my mixed heritage and judged me, but really, they do not know who I am.

Ethnically, I am African American/Indian from my mother’s side of the family and I am Puerto Rican from my father’s side. I was raised by a single mother who taught me at a young age, that education is the key to success in life. Running around in the streets will not get you anywhere - at all. I did not have to read it in books or in the newspaper, I saw this situation throughout my lifetime. I saw murder right in front of my building, I did not personally know the participants, but after that scenario, there was nothing the streets could offer me.

My mother and I managed to exist. My mother taught me how maniacal people can be in the world we live in today. One thing that resonates in my mind that my mom told me is, not everyone is your friend. I thought I was friends with a set of kids who lived in my neighborhood. They were nice to me. They pretended they cared about what I felt. Then one day, these very same friends jumped me. They jumped me on the bus. Nobody came to my defense. Nobody helped me. I had to wait for my stop before I could be released from being

Racism has turned our society into one full of hate and discrimination based of skin color and cultural beliefs. Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. We have created a society in which people who are born into lower classes are unable to climb the social ladder and reach an elite economic status. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…

Minorities are to blame for everything wrong in the world. That statement is what many satirists are writing about. Satirists are running with the idea of mocking racists ideals. Carlos Hoyt Jr., a social-work teacher, depicts racism as a term originally crafted to “frame a phenomenon that, by the early part of the 20th century (having emerged in the 19th century enterprise of classifying peoples according to a racial hierarchy) was powerful, distinct, and in need of nomenclature” (225). Satirists are addressing police brutality, discrimination, criminal injustice, and overall bias.…

The question what does it mean to say whiteness is constructed, is a question that can be taken and answer in different views and ways, because race and social construction is a very complex subject. We can start by defining social construction, in the book “Race and Racism” the author Tanya Maria Golash-Boza, defines it as an idea or way of viewing people based not on biological differences but on social perceptions. The idea of classifying race and differences is a very modern system, which was created by history and colonial encounters, so whiteness is a constructed ideology created by evolution and power. Being that both, oppression and racism, have been a problem for hundreds of years, they cannot be expected to go away in the matter of half of a century. In order for racism and black oppression to be nonexistent, children will have to be taught that they are equal no matter the color of their skin. People move to different places looking for better lives, but instead experience racial discrimination and prejudice. This could be seen in the articles written by Tanya Barrientos, Amy Tan, and Robert Rodriguez that shows how not being fluent in the native language affected them. In their personal experiences, either them or their parents have been discriminated against due to their broken English. The following examples perfectly demonstrate the struggles of prejudice and discrimination non-native speakers in society face due to their inability to speak English at a perfect level.…

Prejudice and Racism in Today's Society Prejudice: a preconceived notion with no basis in fact or actual experience (Oxford Dictionary). Today, many have blocked out prejudice and racism around them. However, prejudice and racism are just as prevalent as they were when Harper Lee wrote about the story of Scout Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Segregation no longer has a public face as it did in the time of Jim Crow. Nor do people gather to watch and “enjoy” public lynchings.…
