This was illustrated when Juror 8 stated, “ I’m not trying to change your mind. It’s just that we’re talking about somebody’s life here. I mean, we can’t decide in five minutes. Suppose we 're wrong?” (12). It shows how the other jurors could just declare him guilty without actually thinking about it and Juror 8 was the only one to go against their opinions. The jurors discrimination against the boy illustrates how unfair life can be for people. The defendant was at a disadvantage only because of the discrimination that was against him. Likewise in, To Kill A Mockingbird, the town was all against Atticus in his decision to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus explained to Scout, “I’m simply defending a Negro- his name’s Tom Robinson. He lives in that little settlement beyond the town dump. He’s a member of Calpurnia’s church, and Cal knows his family well. She says they’re clean living folks. Scout you aren 't old enough to understand some things yet, but there 's been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn 't do much about defending this man” (100). This is another example of how life is made unfair because people can choose to believe whatever they want, without good reason. It was these conflicts that helped to display Rose’s and Lee’s purpose of demonstrating that life is unfair. This is done through explaining how the arbitrary society allows people to make their own decisions that causes problems in life. While trying to resolve these problems the inequality of people, whether it be because of race or class or anything else, is revealed. Life is unfair and unequal and there is nothing that people can do to change that because of the society we live in that allows people to make their own
