This short skit depicted a slave auction in Rome and Greece, but many people were shocked how realistic it was and took offense to it. Some students said, “‘It was crazy,’ a student who attended the event from Chicago’s majority-black Kenwood Academy told WGN TV. Another Kenwood student added: ‘How could they walk up there and nobody stop it?’” Many students were obviously offended by this quick skit. The mock slave auction was too realistic and many African-American students did not appreciate the representation and some were even hurt. Also, only an apology was the punishment for such inappropriate behavior. This shows that schools don’t believe that racism is a serious offense compared to other things, or more action would have been taken to punish these children. With such minor punishments, these children will continue to act with racism, and will affect other students negatively. In a survey taken in Rolling Meadows, a question asked, “Have you ever been a target of racial prejudice in school?” Out of 21 students, 7 students answered that they have been racially harassed. Every 1 out of 3 students in school have been harassed. This is a very serious problem because there are about 300,000 students in District 214. That means about 100,000 students have been racially harassed in school. These numbers are massive. So many students have to go through school getting bullied just because of their color of their
