Giving the information that after his first wife’s suicide, a new woman came into his life. A white nineteen year old girl by the name of Lucille Cameron. He explains how they met in his night club and started off as a business relationship. But within a few days, the mother of the girl said Lucille was abducted by Johnson. Gilmore gives no reasoning why the mother said this other than she succeeded. In my opinion, I feel as if the mother only did this because her daughter was spending her time with a black man. With this situation happening between 1912 and 1913, any kind of interracial relationship was looked down upon. No matter if this was through work or an actual intimate relationship. Most people from both sides did not want their cultures or ethnicities mixing. After the mother did this, Lucille denied any of this happening to her. To further his point, Gilmore explains that even when Lucille denied this from happening, the people against Johnson wanted him destroyed. Gilmore follows this with the crime of transporting women across state lines being put upon Johnson. This being put on top of other baggage being said against Johnson makes this hard not to think if this would all happen if it was a white man. Some people wanted him murdered. Other wanted him to have his heavyweight champion title taken from him. But the fellow black people wanted him to be taken away from being called a black man. Other black people were so angry, they did not want Johnson to even be associated with their color. This is a prime example of how racism came from both ends of the races. Black people hated that Johnson wanted his time to be spent with white women. Black people in this time also only wanted other blacks to be allowed in their lives. Separation between races was a giant problem in all aspects of life. Black people were getting even more hatred towards them because of the actions of Johnson. Anyone would someone if their lives are worse because of someone else’s decisions. By my reading, Gilmore seems to focus on how Johnson is causing problems to other people 's lives. But if interracial relationships were not looked down upon and hated, there would have been peace among all these
