Some more obvious than others. 1 It can be described as prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that an individual’s race is more superior.
Racism is usually thought to be the discrimination between people of different color. When most people hear the word racism, their minds instantaneously think about blacks and whites, the civil rights movement, the riots and protests and important figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. However, racism can also be in terms of religion and culture.
As described by Cynthia Silva Parker in her video Racism- what does it take to end it? “Racism is a system of oppression created to justify social, political and economic hierarchy” by using the word “oppression” she explains that racism in our society, both in the past and today, is described as a system of prolonged unjust and inhumane treatment between differing individuals. She then goes on to explain that in our society there is a certain picture painted that “white people are at the top, and everyone else is at the bottom” (Parker) and that there are two parts to racism or two different ways in which racism presents itself. Most commonly in our society today certain religions are observed negatively by the majority of people. In the United States especially, there is an image that is directed towards “Islam” or “being Muslim”. People instantly think “terrorists” or 9/11 disregarding the fact that not all the people that follow that religion cause harm or intentionally maltreat anyone. In fact the whole religion is based on doing good but nonetheless Islamaphobia has got numerous people being afraid and mistreating people.
