According to the poem “water people were harvester and volcano people sowed in ash” (line 12 and 13). Also “they gated in trees and built houses of blocks,” so it is a clear difference in the living circumstances between the two groups of people, and the water people seem to be living better. Based on the title the singing boy represents Trayvon; an innocent seventeen year old boy gun down by a white male neighborhood watch volunteer. She relates the Trayvon to the singing boy by him walking to the store for tea and candy while singing a song. She uses imagery to display his that he was not threat to the older gentlemen that attacks. Because the water people were view as superior to the volcano people it was unfamiliar to for the singing boy to be walking in the area of the water people. It was natural for the water purpose to be frightened by a darker complexion than his own. It was accepted for him to protect himself from an unfamiliar being. This is similar to the case of Trayvon Martin was one of the many that lost their live to a scentless act of violent. Following his death and many more three African American women came together to form a movement called Black Lives Matter. This movement was a response to the anti-black racism in our society. Black lives matter stands as the voice for the black community; fighting for all the little black boy/ girls that who were murdered and no one was held accountable for the crime committed.
