Sal has a pizzeria which has been around for over 25 years without any problems. The people around the neighborhood loved him until Buggin out questions his wall of only Italian American and no Black celebrities. He started a riot and this lead to a huge scene in which Radio Raheem was choked to death by police officers. This is an issue that still exists today, such as the Eric Garner case which he was strangled to death from a choke hold which was banned already. Garner was choked after police officer believed he was selling illegal cigarettes. They had put him on a choke hold and held him to the ground after 11 cries for help Garner passed away. This is just one example of racial discrimination that has happen recently. When you open a newspaper there is a 95% chance you will read and see an issue or a case on police brutality, often times on colored males. If they used this term in the story which showed they were more likely able to get away with it, however if you use it today in the same concept there will be lots of controversy. Sam wanted to stay out of the issue as in the story he had said “You better bit gave anything to do with it at all; you better stay way out of it”. Sam may have felt that way because of his race. During the early 20th century African American still were fighting for their right which shows Sam didn’t want to get into any issues or fights while in the case of Nick went to go visit and tell Anderson. During the time of the story creations African American had just started getting recognition such as the Harlem Renaissance which started in the 1920s. During 1931 nine black African American youth were charged in raping two white women there was little evidence however the southern jury wanted to sentence them to death in which the Supreme Court overturned the conviction twice. Finally 4/9 boys are freed while the other five severed long prison terms. African Americans were getting some power and gaining however the fact that five of the boys were sentenced even with little evidence showed at the time they had still little rights. As I mentioned in all of the works racism is they key aspect and the theme. We live in a
