Racism In Today's Society

In today’s society, there are a lot of things I wish I had the power to fix. Poverty, environmental issues, and racism are all things that I believe need to change. However, I want to key in on racism since it is something that has been in the headlines recently with the Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin cases. Whether or not these shootings had to do with race is based on personal opinion. Either way, it has abruptly brought racism into public view. One can’t deny the splintering fact that racism is still alive in 2015. Racism is defined as the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. As seen in the definition, racism isn’t only towards African Americans; it can be toward any race. Since I am …show more content…
A lot of people are oblivious to the consequences of racism while some people don’t know how commonly it still exists. Spreading the word about racism in today’s society will surely make a step in the direction we need to go to end this small minded way of thinking. Stereotypical ways of thinking need to come to an end if we want to see racism end. It is a common stereotype that black people are grammatically incorrect, indirectly labeling them as uneducated and illiterate. This stereotype is wrong and very humiliating. This stereotypes and stereotypes like it need to stop, people who categorize blacks like this don’t see how much damage it causes and it is treated like a joke. My last proposal on how to end racism is for people of color to forgive. African Americans commonly hold grudges towards white people in the name of slavery. Slavery ended in 1865, over 100 years ago and it needs to be put behind us. Slavery is something that lingers in almost every African American’s mind, it is hurtful to think about but whites today can’t be blamed for the wrongdoing of their

Our society is like a statue, they both need the proper structure needed in order to keep it steady, but when one piece does not fit, then they will both topple down. Although statues may not relate to the problem, racism can relate to the one piece that does not fit, and this problem is explained in the articles " Black Men In Public Spaces", by Brent Staples, and " Is Everyone A Little Bit Racist" , by Nicolas Kristof. These articles dive into the topic of how racism affects everyday lives and how detrimental it is to the society and the people within. Also, it shows the unfortunate story of a victim of racism. Unless changes are made, racism will rule supreme in communities and there will be nothing for people to stop it.…

Countless problems within society are a burden toward people, especially that of racism and racial stereotyping, but it is not a problem that can be solved at the blink of an eye, as Rome was not built in a day. The ideas of racial inequality and stereotypical racism, as well as the idea that racism is a challenge yet to be solved, are referenced within the articles “Black Men and Public Spaces” by Brent Staples and “Is Everyone A Little Bit Racist” by Nicolas Kristof. These articles discuss the pressure and suffering that African-Americans face due to racism, as they are stereotyped to be criminals that are accustomed to violence, even by themselves, and the negative influence that subconscious discrimination has upon this predicament, which…

Racism has existed since the early 1600s when African Americans were first brought to America against their will to work as slaves. It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Movement, beginning in 1955, that the lives of African Americans started to transform and the U.S. Supreme Court began to terminate “Jim Crow” laws and ban segregation (“Civil Rights Movement,” n.d.). The main goal of eradicating segregation was to reach what is known as “racial equality”, which is the balance between all the races making everyone equal. Since the Civil Right Movement, our country has continued to make steps of improvement including, swearing in our nation’s first black president and the fact that black people and white people are now able to go to the same school.…

Racism is a serious problem that doesn't receive as much attention as it should. As a community we should be joining together to get rid of racism completely. Although racism isn't as extreme as it used to be and humanity has taken a giant leap to get to where it is today, there is still room for improvement. Victims of racism in extreme cases have to deal with emotional trauma and other mental health issues. Although I feel that if everyone focuses on this social justice issue, people will understand what they’re racist comments are doing to people, and victims of racism will find it easier to speak out about their issues and we as a community can help them.…

Racism has been around for many years and it is an issue that has never been fully resolved, although some may believe that it has. It is not uncommon to see crimes being mentioned everywhere but thanks to the media, we have seen the many incidents occurring recently involving white cops and black men, hence we have come to realize how racist we really are as a society and how big of an issue racism actually is even now. In the textbook Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, we are introduced to some of the first sociologists and their theories. A solution can be found by better educating today’s people about the racism that still exists. Upon watching a Washington post video, I learned of many facts on racism that I found shocking. It was brought to my attention that a black person’s job application can be judged just by the sound of their name.…

As Einstein said that, “You cannot change a problem with the same thinking that created it” (Lifford). What Einstein says shows in racism, we can’t change it by thinking about it in the same ways. People should step up and show some actions toward racism. we usually get caught up in the intellectual debates discussing, proving, and blaming people that they are racist or not. At the Museum of Tolerance, Tina Lifford, the author of Huffington posts said that there are two doors with signs that read “racists” and “non-racists.”…
