Racism is a topic that is prevalent in today society that need to be address. Social work was recognized as a predominantly white field that had no gratitude for assisting rural areas they consider isolated communities (Williams & Parrott, 2014). If racism is address in a classroom setting, most student will feel that only a professor of color will be able to relate to the topic; hindsight he or she had endure some type of pain of racism, discrimination, or unearned privilege (Miller, Hyde & Ruth, 2004, p. 409). I believe in order for society to move forward people need to identify and acknowledge certain privileges they have over others. In addition to, acknowledging behaviors and actions that are defensive, prejudice, patronizing, and/or stereotyping (Miller, Hyde & Ruth, 2004 p. 414) to dehumanize a group of people. Once people are able to become vulnerable, discomfort, and honest, they can develop an understanding that people should not be generalized as a group …show more content…
In this course I will acquire things as it relates to racism such as mechanisms of oppression and discrimination, understanding values and beliefs of different cultures, and type of bias behaviors. Having a comprehension on how the world or society function will create a better atmosphere, relation and appreciation for one
