Although racial discriminations are mainly ideas that are conceived in the minds of others, these ideas can still affect the lives of others around them. When children become exposed to the idea of racism, it can begin to negatively influence their mental health, by causing large amounts of stress. A survey done by the U.S. Census Bureau on the national health of children, found that kids who were exposed to racism, were more likely to experience disorders such as anxiety and depression. In the Kite Runner Amir explains how after the rape, he “barely saw Hassan ... [and] it [seemed] all he [wanted] to do [was] sleep”(Hosseini 85). Hassan had been, as Assef said “[Taught] a lesson”, and was sexualy assaulted for being a lower class muslim. As a cause of this exposure to racial discrimination, Hassan had began feeling depressed, not wanting to leave the confines of his room, for the fear of facing Amir and what he would think of him now. Students at school are constantly exposed to different forms of racism and “more than 180 of [racial discrimination] cases [take] place [in] children’s and teens’ grade schools”(Kowalski). Two of the main sources of racial induced stress at school, is the perception that certain ethnic groups will be treated unfairly or differently than others. This stress of expecting negative result from supposed discriminating teachers, causes students to lose motivation in the work they do and as a result they will not feel the need to try their best or even show up for classes. In addition, as mentioned in the above paragraph, stresses of racism can affect the physical and mental abilities of students in and outside of the classroom. When students are stressed they can become sleep deprived, this affects their performance in the classroom, as they will not be able to pay attention to teachers during lessons or focus while working. Continuing outside of the classroom there are many cases of certain students discriminating others just for being of a different race. Similar to a case in the United States at Silver Spring, Md, an eleven year old girl was verbally harassed by a group of boys who were chanting “Let’s build a wall … .You need to go back to Mexico. … The girl felt ‘petrified’ about returning to school the next day”(Kowalski).
