Politics were heavily impacted around the time period of the Harlem Renaissance. Up until the lasting moments of the Civil War, the vast majority of African-Americans lived in South as slaves. By the end of slavery, the newly freed African-Americans knew that for justice to be achieved, a certain platform would have to be acquired. The sense of unity and self righteousness present during the Civil Rights movement has clears stems to the Harlem Renaissance. While the Harlem Renaissance is considered one of the finer moments in African-American literature, it is the 1960’s were writers whom were influenced by the Renaissance used their literature to express their feelings during a time where oppression was at an all time high. For example, you take someone like Gwendolyn Brooks, whose poems described the day-to-day harsh injustice of being an African-American and you can see clear Renaissance
