For example, “The Foundations of the Earth” by Randall Kenan makes a strong view about how everyone is different. Kenan is a black American author who focuses his story on religion and homosexuality. Most of Kenan’s work is focused on being gay and black in society. In the story, you notice that Edward and Gabriel was an interracial and homosexual couple that no one approved of based off their religious views. Edward then dies and his grandma Maggie discovers her grandson’s secret and cannot believe what she hears as she sits in shock and anger. Maggie then confronts Gabriel with anger and hate and she treats him as if he was a piece of dirt. As the story goes on we can see how Maggie’s character changes towards Gabriel once they got close and build a relationship she finally accepts him for who he is. She reevaluates her religious views and outlook on society to discover that she and Gabriel are actually the same. In “The Foundations of the Earth”, describes how an individual comes out with his sexuality after he dies and no one accepted him because he was homosexual and went against his religion as a Christian. Kenan wrote his story about how it was sinful to be homosexual and everyone judged them for being different. Alexie told his story about a young boy learning to be successful and even everyone judged him from where he came from he didn’t allow that negativity stop him from doing well. And lastly Hughes approached the problem that even though we are a different color we are the same, which is American. All of these talented authors address the fact that we should all be treated equally. The claim that each of these poems give is the knowledge of one’s individuality can give a person the ultimate powers that are courage, wisdom, strength, and
