The focus of it falls more heavily on it’s more sensitive side, showing the bond formed over time between Michael and the Tuohy’s, but that does not dissuade even the strongest of men from watching and getting involved with this film; the issues it shows and the emotions it provokes are enough to keep any audience fully engaged. Sandra Bullock does a jaw-dropping job in her role of Leigh Anne Tuohy, a stereotypical strong-southern-belle type who becomes Michael’s gateway to a better life. She portrays both the heartfelt, motherly side of Leigh Anne and the strong, independent side of her so seamlessly that it’s as if she lives the characters life. Her acting fully immerses you into the mind of a woman who will not allow anyone to step on her and makes her performance almost mesmerizing. One scene in particular really shows off Bullocks acting chops, and that is the scene in which she intervenes during Michael’s football practice to help him. Her facial expression and strong, almost steely gaze draw you in and show you that she is absolutely determined to help Michael in any way she can. Another feature that brings the movie up is its expert set. The set itself exemplifies the idea of classism, going from the spick-and-span of the Tuohy’s money-filled Memphis suburb to “Hurt Village”, the rundown neighborhood where Michael comes from.
