Craig Silvey’s novel 2009 novel, Jasper Jones, is coming of age story set in the fictional mining town of Corrigan, Australia over the summer of 1965 where the protagonist, Charlie Bucktin is exposed to confronting issues which ultimately change the way in which he views the world. As Lois T. Stover noted in 2001, “Good young adult literature deals with the themes and issues which mirror the concerns of society … [and] help[s] readers understand the complexities … [of] these issues.” Jasper Jones, substantiates this claim, with one of the key issues addressed being racism and scapegoating.…
One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia was a novel that I found myself having a hard time connecting to on a personal level. Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern are three young African American girls that are being sent to spend time with their mother that left them when they were very young. During their time with their mother, they go to a center and a summer camp where they learn about and get involved with the Black Panther Movement. Dealing with being an outsider when thrown into the life and social status of their absent mother and learning, facing, and experiencing racial discrimination; it was not easy for me to relate to these girls and their story.…
As a start, the theme of opening ones eyes and seeing the wrong in their "perfect" worlds. This may be illustrated in Fahrenheit 451 when Clarisse asks Montag "Are you happy" By this, Clarisse is initiating the thoughts in Montag about if the burning of books, and living his life in this way is what he really wants. She is attempting to understand if this life choice is really what Montag is content with. In the same way, Agatha begins to do the same to Anderton in her very few words of "Can you see" to him. This repeated phrase throughout the movie has the same underlying theme each time, of opening ones eyes to discovery and realizing the indignity of their world.…
After I learned to question everything, focus on diction, syntax and the author 's style throughout the course, I came to realize Claudia Rankine main focus was not just racism as a whole. She encourages the readers to undergo the experience and truly understand racism and discrimination. Not only did Rankine give multiple examples and encounters but she also incorporated artworks that spoke louder than the words. To the left is Carrie Mae Weems’s,“Blue Black Boy”. This art piece shows three identical (blue tinted) photos with different labels.…
James Ballwin writes an amazing short story call Sonny’s Blue. James Baldwin surrounds the Sonny Blue’s with the theme of suffering. Like his short story, James Baldwin is not a Stanger to suffering. He stood up for black’s rights but when through his adverse and struggles because he was a gay, black man.…
Past and Present Racial Issues Whether it is a drama, poem, or short story, all literature that is written has a main idea, or theme. Sometimes, literature will have a common theme. Two poems with a similar theme about race are “La Migra” by Pat Mora and “Ballad of Birmingham” by Dudley Randall. A short story that focuses on the same theme is the short story “Big Black Good Man” by Richard Wright. These different poems and short stories share a similar theme of race which is a current theme that is happening in our society today.…
How People reacted to Phoenix, and why? Why there is racist in this world? Where exactly the racist movement is going? Sometimes people think that we are different because we have different colors, races, family, social class, however; we all are human. White people think they are better than black, rich people think they are better than poor all of that, but we are the same.…
Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas” in more ways than one. In the story “Harrison Bergeron”. The world has many similarity, when you think about racism in today's society. When you think about how we live in a country where people with different cultures are been treated unfairly. We live in a country with many different races, religions, ethics and color.…
Finding Forrester, a 2000 drama movie, describes the experience of a young, black boy whose outstanding writing skills give him the opportunity to attend a better school. Though the movie talks about the difficulties of the main character (Jamal Wallase) who is a black skin person, interestingly, in my opinion, the main problem is not related to racism; there are a couple of racism behaviors but as secondary topics. In my opinion, the film refer to a variety of difficulties that low-class people face in the attempt of achieving success, at the same time, showing how valuable the feeling of friendship is. However, the most important issue I want to talk about is how much real Jamal’s act’s consequences are and how much those acts are justified.…
In the slave narrative, Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom completely diminishes the poorly exaggerated stereotype of a black person as shown in the documentary Ethnic Notions, which was widely believed amongst the masses. William and Ellen Craft ultimately used the societies naiveté to their advantage as they made their great escape unscathed. Their journey from Georgia, a principal slave state is a remarkable tale that encompasses loyalty, courage, love, and wit unparalleled to what may have been expected from a slave. William Craft effectively played his role as an obedient slave towards “his master” while escaping the atrocious life of a slave. Ellen Craft expertly mirrored that in which enslaved her playing a vital role in their escape.…
The text urges readers to look deeper into an individual and confront the unknown. This book has great significance and relevance, especially in the trying times that we are now experiencing with race relations in our country. This book is a must…
Do fans choose their "team" based on preference for vampires or for werewolves? What comments lead you to believe this? I think that they do not choose their team based on characters because they like some things to attract them. I saw many people watch movies to see what happened and love to watch. I thought that not dependent on based on preference for vampires or for werewolves…

The novel Flight written by Sherman Alexie, it’s the traveling story of an adolescent named Zits through time as he tries to understand the real meaning behind his biracial roots, from the Native Americans and the whites. Throughout the plot, Zits faces situations that put him into the ropes of understanding and overcoming concepts that help him shape his persona. All the circumstances and obstacles makes him wonder about what it means to understand to come from two different cultures that have been attacking each other for such a long time. As Zits travel through the historical time in both the bodies of white men and Native Americans, the concepts of shame, identity, and justice contribute to his persona development as he gets to understand…
Brown Girl, Brownstones was the novel I chose to read for the class. During class when we had to choose a novel, this was the one that caught my eye automatically just by the title. This novel is by Paule Marshall and was the first novel she ever wrote that was published in 1959. This novel was a very good read in my opinion, the diction and story line was very “breathtaking”. There are many ups and downs throughout this entire novel that the Boyce family went through.…
