This novel is so important because it shows what African American families had to go through in the Jim Crow era, but Mildred D. Life in the Jim Crow era for African Americans was unfair the Whites had more rights than African Americans, and they took advantage of the African Americans whenever they got the chance. Taylor wants to tell people about segregation is that it is wrong and there is no point to be racist, and there are people whose friends or family may be racist but that person might not be racist. Even though most of the White people in the novel are racist some are not such as Jeremy and Mr. Jamison many times Jeremy invited Cassie and the boys to be his friend he said he wished their schools ended at the same time so they could ¨still see each other¨ (196). The times everyone would work together no matter what race they were would be when they all had the same goal like the fire they didn't care who you were they just wanted any help you could give them, but in that situation, ¨the ranks of the firefighters¨ (267), had turned into anyone that could help them with the fire. There are some people who may not do anything about it but because they can't do anything about it, such as Mr. Jamison when the Logans were gonna back the shopping in Vicksburg with their land Mr. Jamison, ¨backs the credit¨ (161) so that they don't lose their land. This is the message that Mildred D. Taylor wants to tell you with this
