In 1979, a group of catholic bishops stated in a letter to the congregation that “Racism is an evil which endures in our society and in our Church. Despite apparent advances and even significant changes in the last two decades, the reality of racism remains. In large part, it is only external appearances which have changed.” This quote references the apparent problem that still exists in the U.S. despite “external changes.” Many external changes have been only ceremonial with many forms of racism ever present in our society today. We can change the laws, the appearances, but these things are useless without a change of heart. Racism can usually be attributed to history between those groups of people as well as the passing down of opinions of one generation to the next. Studies have shown that if your father or mother is more likely to distrust a specific race, you’re much more likely to distrust that specific race as well. The current status of racism is one of outstanding progress based on the last century but still needs major improvement and refinement. There many organizations that are devoted to working to eliminate racism however, I chose to select organizations that don’t only represent a specific group like the NAACP or YWCA/YMCA because I believe that when we look at the issue we must consider solving it for the benefit of everyone, not a specific gender, race, or nationality. Some organizations that are devoted to solving the problem of racism are the catholic church, the international movement against all forms of racism (IMADR), and Anti-Racist Alliance. The largest agency and largest charitable organization that is fighting racism is the Catholic church. They fight racism with many different types of efforts as Pope’s often speak out against racial discrimination and condemn institutional racism. Many bishops and collectives of them have been instrumental in highlighting modern racial laws and countries who perpetuate the issue. Another agency fighting racism is the International Movement Against All forms of Discrimination Racism. It is an international non-profit, non-governmental human rights organization devoted to eliminating discrimination and racism globally. They do this by promoting their core values which are empowerment, solidarity, and advocacy. They aim to promote the capacity of discriminated groups to raise their voices and represent themselves in activities to combat discrimination. They try to promote cooperation and solidarity among
