Today we do not have segregated schools, bathrooms or drinking fountains. We are able to be come friends with people of a different race and even marry people of different races. Overall, we are able to marry who ever we want in this day and age. Opinions of race and racism are much different when you travel to places in the United States. For example, the south still can be rather racist depending where a person may visit or live. It also depends where a person grew up and what values a person grew up with, which may indicate if someone may be racist or not. However, it also brings tension and racism along with it. We all come from many different cultures, some being pretty similar and some being completely different. Sense we come from different cultures and races we all believe in different ideas and beliefs. For example, the Native Americans have a very different culture than some one who was born in Bemidji, Minnesota. There is a huge tension between some of the Native Americans and Caucasians people throughout Minnesota and the United States as a whole. The tension between the Native Americans and the Caucasians reminds me of what the African Americans might have felt in the 1800’s until 1900’s and even today. The African Americans just tried to maintain their culture and heritage throughout the rough times they went through when they were beaten and killed for just because of their skin color. The similarities and differences are numerous and may be different for different people depending on their standing on specific issues or the ways that they were raised.
