Huck spends the entirety of the book trying to discover who he is and what he believes In this search for who he is he has many people and things to look up to and possibly supersede, does he follow: religion, or follow his gut instincts? “ Miss Watson's big nig*er, named Jim...When we was ten feet of tom whispered to me, and wanted to tie Jim to the tree” as huck is still on his journey of self discovery at this point in the book he is still very childish and incapable of voicing his opinions and creating his own ideas, he spend majority of this first episode focused on tom and how he can be like him. For a while he is stuck in this childish state that needs to be left behind. As the book goes on the childish huck continues to do the same thing but is seen to become more aware of the consequences to his actions. “I went to the cavern to get some, and found a rattlesnake in there. I killed him, and curled him up on the foot of Jim’s blanket, ever so natural, thinking there’d be some fun when Jim found him there. Later when him and Jim encounter two con me we see huck not only have another point of growth, we see a start of a moral compass being formed, as before him and tom planned of being savage bandits in this chapter huck defends the family who is getting conned by returning the money in efforts to do right by the people who stuffed such a terrible loss. . I run in the parlor and took a swift look around, and the only place I see to hide the bag was in the coffin. “The lid was shoved along about a foot, showing the dead man’s face down in there, with a wet cloth over it, and his shroud on.
