Of Mules and Me: How It Feels To Be Colored Me Zora Neal Hurston’s, How It Feels To Be Colored Me, has a theme of feeling isolated and feeling like you differ from other people because of your race. When reading this excerpt I learned that a person should not be represented by the color of their skin but how their personality. This would then expose me to the thought or idea of racial segregation and what it was/is like to be black in America. How It Feels To Be Colored Me was written just about 60 years after the abolition of slavery but yet people were then still segregated because of racial prejudice. Hurston gets exposed to the idea of racism when she is thirteen where she goes on to a boarding school in Jacksonville. In 2012, White officer George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin who was an African American teen. Martin was unarmed while carrying a bag of skittles and a an Arizona drink. Zimmerman was found not guilty. In 2016, Alton Sterling an African American was shot by two white cops. The cops were not imprisoned. More blacks are incarcerated than whites. According to the NAACP, “African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites. Depiction of blacks in advertisements are often racists”. Dove Body Wash recently put out a racist advertisement. According to The Washington Post depicting the ad, 4 frames shows “a dark-skinned woman in what appears to be a bathroom, a bottle of Dove body wash in the lower right-hand corner of the frame and In subsequent frames, the woman reaches down and lifts up her shirt (and apparently the rest of her skin/costume) to reveal a smiling white woman”.
