Professor Osorio, Professor of Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, states that, “The margins that we as Hawaiians have been pushed to include, you know, high incarceration for crime, low levels of ownership of land, and low levels of education” (Hansen Paragraph 7). Osorio is stating that the Hawaiian people are being unfairly treated when it comes to education, land ownership, and jail sentencing. This is a great example of racism towards the Hawaiian people, and it is a very wrong thing. Hansen also states, “So, it seems you’re saying that Hawaii’s past is continuing to affect racial and ethnic relations today” (Hansen Paragraph 8). What this means is that racism towards Hawaiians was accuring since the arrival of foreigners. Another quote that shows racism towards Hawaiians is, “I believe that Hawaiians deserve the right to self determination. They had the right to create their own nation in the 19th century, and I believe that they have the right today to have that restored” (Osorio Paragraph 17). What Osorio is stating is that the Hawaiian people should have their rights and freedom back, how they did before the arrival of foreigners in the 19th century. Overall, Racism in Hawaii has been growing since the early years of foreigner arrival, and will only get worse unless a drastic change happens. The causes for the racism in Hawaii come from the racial tensions between races, the dozens of ethnicities that are on these islands, and the unfairness to the Hawaiians. The Hawaiian people deserve to be treated fairly, and be respected more because their land was taken from them years
