In today’s society when the topic of “racism” is brought up, many people say, “That was so long ago”, but is that necessarily true? Are people still treated differently and unfairly just because of the color of their skin? Are they sometimes exposed to lower chances of succeeding? Unfortunately, the answers to all of these questions are yes. Children today are all given an opportunity and access to certain resources, but they are not all given an equal chance to succeed with what they are given.

Being fact that I grew up in a racist society, I grew up to be alright. My mother raised me with the mindset to only do what I know to do without letting anyone or anything get in my way. I think parents can develop healthy children in a racist society by simply teaching their child to own up to what they are and to be very proud of it. Research has found positive outcomes for black children when their parents educate them about racism and positive cultural values and beliefs to them about their racial and cultural heritage. It helps them to better cope with adversity. Communities can help children in a racist society by doing activities that will help unite people of every color and ethnic background. Today, many kids attend a predominantly black or white school, but if the system were to put the two schools together, they would be more likely to develop a healthier life.
