Unfortunately, that logic only applies if you start off on a level playing field with your competitor. Researchers from the Young Invincibles looked at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the US Census, and found that an African American male with an Associates degree has the same chances at a job as a White male with only a high school diploma.(Think Progress) It’s because of corruption like this that America has systems in place such as Affirmative action. Affirmative action is defined as, ‘any measure, beyond simple termination of a discriminatory practice, adopted to correct or compensate for past or present discrimination or to prevent discrimination from recurring in the future.’ in other, much simpler, words, ‘taking positive steps to end discrimination, to prevent its recurrence, and to creative new opportunities that were previously denied minorities and women.’ This legislation was implemented as a part of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 for educational equality, then implemented in 1972 by The Equal Employment Opportunities Act for equality in the workforce. An ‘insider’ is a part of a privileged majority; while an ‘outsider’ is the one being discriminated against. When an outsider is finally let in an insider will feel put out, both figuratively and literally. There are everyday privileges that white people get to enjoy that they never appreciate because they don’t realize what a privilege it is; but when this privilege is taken away in order to accommodate somebody else it’s an injustice. Jennifer R. Holladay wrote the book White Anti-Racist Activism: A Personal Roadmap on the impact of White privilege on white anti-racism activism. Holladay brings light to the ways in which she was privileged and didn’t realize it and gives transparency to a certain aspect of white privilege as a whole, “These seemingly benign perks [shampoo/bandaids/pantyhose] also demonstrate a danger on closer examination. Let’s say that I forgot to pack my shampoo for a business trip. When I get to the hotel, I see that the complimentary shampoo is not the standard Suave product to which I am accustomed but rather Pink Oil Lotion for African American hair.
