You treat people with respect no matter who they are, a basic golden-rule set in place to every even at the youngest of ages. For one to discriminate someone based off their culture, race, or physical features is disrespect completely. The day a human is born, these laws are implicitly set in place, no one is above nor below these rules. The issue at hand is that members of society are so righteous in their ways, they only sustain to what the media tells them. James Bladwin, an activist for equal rights stated, “What white people have to do is try to find out in their own hearts why it was necessary to have the n****r in the first place. I am not a n****r. I am a man. But if you think I’m a n****r, it means you need it… You, the white people, invented him, and you have to find out why. And the future of the country depends on that.” (Baldwin). Society depicts these poor African-Americans, as well as other cultures, as the slum of America and react violently when told otherwise. America has set up this wrongful cliche of the black man, disregarding all respect for the hard-working African-American and portraying them as degenerates. Hasty generalizations like this is the problem with racism in America, because if not for these other cultures America would not have: coffee, paper, toothbrushes, peanut butter, heart pacemakers, the telegraph, one of the first …show more content…
James Tillman, a social scientist, explains racism is practically needed in society, to help further one’s social identity and even a nation’s identity. (Tillman 1973). The struggle to find one’s identity is very puzzling to many, but racism should not take part in this. It no way alright for a young African-American boy to grow up just knowing that “white people are racist, stay away from them, because I’m dark-skinned”, this is very absurd as identity doesn’t come with one’s flaws, it should come with one’s triumphs. In the year 2017 people are identifying non-white cultures by their flaws, and leads these white Americans to feel no empathy for those who are different. For example a study by Vox Magazine showed that 67% of white Americans don’t have any posts regarding racism (https://www.vox.com/). Social media is a must for this era, meaning most people truly express what they think, feel, and perceive on these platforms. Whites don’t post about racism because they simply don’t care, they feel no pain for those who are different than them. America’s white society need a wake-up call because if there is no realization that it exists, the true identity of America may never be
