Racism in America
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal”- Thomas Jefferson. These words sounded like music to the ears of African American slaves. But the truth is that these words did not include all men, but have excluded the slaves of whom at least 200 were owned by the very man that wrote this speech. Even Abraham Lincoln felt no need to interfere with slavery held the belief that African Americans were inferior to whites. From a classic utilitarianism view
Jeremy Bentham would not be happy, because according to this perspective “it affirms the principle that the right action is the one that directly produces the best balance of happiness over unhappiness for concerns.” Sadly this issue with racism is at the very foundation of American and is ingrained in our psych, and has grown taken on many forms today. This belief has infiltrated the media, the educational system on a mass scale. When it came to science the name that pops up is Charles Darwin. Many has claimed that his book “The Decent of Man” which was published after his “The origin of a species” Taught that the European race was the advanced race and that those of the Black race were equal to a gorilla. Whether the statements are true or false, because of the belief that it is so, the treatment of African Americans as inferior was ramped. To make matters worse this type of thinking made its ugly head to the post office. Post cards were created and sold with the pictures of apes and black people as being the same. Reaching the children department, books that depicted the image of the picaninny (term for dark skin blacks) like “little black Sambo” by Helen Bannerman was a big time seller. As the image of the ape became popular among white Americans so did the image of the picaninny whose hair was always wild or they were lazy, spoke broken English and was stupid. Because this type of thinking still exist today, the belief that all men are created equal will remain untrue. First each individual must ask themselves what was
American? What is America? And what can America be? For this country to thrive in strength it must make that saying come true “all men (women) are created equal.” Kant would agree with that slogan especially if it is universal in this country. Because of this type of thinking, America cannot carry the title “The United States of America”, because in the year of 2016 we are not united. For us to become a truly a great county we must see each other as not only human beings but see each other as Americans. Education cannot be bias, and biasness cannot exist in the work force. If this were to happen everyone can benefit, because we would flourish not only as a country, but as a great nation. But the sad reality is this is can’t happen and it will not happen.
