Racism is a common issue all over the world. Every nation will experience this type of issue regardless how develop they are. Racism is an act of discrimination directly against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. Racism has showed how humans can be divided because of differences in cultural and physical appearance. History has showed that racism was always an issue for every people living in a diverse society. This issue can be seen from ancient times that can lead to physical conflicts like fighting to wars. It is like an old Latin proverb used to say “Homo homini lupus” meaning “a man is a wolf to another man”. It also showed that it is a basic human nature to do such a thing. It has a population of around 260 million people. It is a diverse country that consists over 300 ethnic groups. Most of the population of Indonesia is ethnically native Indonesian ancestry. Around less than 5% of the population has foreign ancestry such as Chinese Indonesians. Indonesia has over 17.000 islands and the ethnic group spreads in all over 900 islands. Racism in Indonesia is common because we have a lot of different culture. In each island, we have a lot of ethic groups interacting with each other daily. Education in Indonesia is still very poor. That is why People who embrace racism are usually majority of ignorant people. People who are well educated and tolerant among others know that racism is …show more content…
We can still see racism happening in everyday life but becoming less major in big cities. People sometimes got labeled depending on the race. When I was growing up as a Chinese Indonesian, I felt various form of racism from some of the locals. They called me based on my ethnic group, tease me because of my physical appearance by making a joke and sometimes didn’t give me the privilege like others. In 2016, Indonesian people are becoming more open minded and more accepting. They started recognizing that Chinese Indonesian is part of Indonesian rather than seeing it as people from another country. Although, Chinese Indonesian still strongly keeping their culture and traditions. They act more like Indonesian by adopting Indonesian value by integrating with the society they live in.
