Change can be a scary thing. Sometimes it is for the best, other times, not so much. Everyone has their own opinion about change, some like a change in scenery, others, like myself, hate it. Change can be shown in different ways. In the three short stories, “The Lottery”, “American Flag Stands for Tolerance”, and “What, of this Goldfish, Would you Wish?” all have examples of fearing to change. Although we might not always agree with it, change is bound to happen. Some people are afraid of change, it means things will be different, and some people who have been accustomed to one thing, may try and fight change.

As a boy the KGB, which was the security agency for the Soviet Union, would come by often, which years later lead to Sergei disliking people coming up to his door and knocking on it. When the young man knocked on Sergei’s door, the young boy tells Sergei that he has a couple questions he wants to put on TV. Sergei tells the boy straight up that he wants nothing to do with him. The people in “The Lottery”, were afraid to change their tradition because they all grew up doing the lottery. The people who disagreed with burning the flag in “American Flag Stands for Tolerance” were afraid that if it was legal to burn the flag, that it would cause conflict in the country and other countries would see that weakness and use it to their advantage. Also, Sergei in “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish” was afraid that he would lose his only companion, his goldfish. All three of these stories show fear of change. Being afraid of change is okay, but sometimes, change needs to happen, or else it could impact a person, a community, or a country
