A young black woman, Sarah, was waiting for her husband, Silas, to return from selling his crop. She also took care of her baby, Ruth. One day, a white salesman showed up and tried to sell her a graphophone. They talked for a while, but as she was getting him some water, he attempted to seduce her. Initially she resisted him, but later stopped. The white man slept with her and left. He left the record player with her and told her that he would try to return in the morning to convince her husband to buy it. When Silas returned, he saw the record player and suspected that Sarah had been unfaithful. He drove her out of the house in a rage and whipped her as she went. Silas hated white people so he worked hard to own his farm. He was livid that Sarah had slept with a white man, and when the white salesman returned with a friend in the morning, he first whips and then shoots one of them. Silas protested that he did not want to die but had to because he could never be free in a white man 's world. Sarah took Ruth and ran into the hills, where she watched Silas in a gunfight with the white mob that came to get him. He later died when they burnt down his house while he was inside. Silas was livid mainly because a white man slept with his wife. He felt insulted and said “They take your land, they take your freedom, they take your life, and now they take your woman” (Wright 152). He later died fighting to redeem his manhood against the white
