The main idea of this chapter was to inform the reader of all the different factors that played a role into enslaving blacks including: “the desperation of starving settlers, the special helplessness of the displaced African, the powerful incentive of profit for slave trader and planter, the temptation of superior status for poor whites, the elaborate controls against escape and rebellion, the legal and social punishment of black and white collaboration”. These factors in which ultimately lead to racism; but emphasizing the idea that these factors are a part of history, and are not natural.
From reading this chapter I learned a lot more about the web of events that all contribute to racism starting with the colonists. Also, I learned much

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia was a novel that I found myself having a hard time connecting to on a personal level. Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern are three young African American girls that are being sent to spend time with their mother that left them when they were very young. During their time with their mother, they go to a center and a summer camp where they learn about and get involved with the Black Panther Movement. Dealing with being an outsider when thrown into the life and social status of their absent mother and learning, facing, and experiencing racial discrimination; it was not easy for me to relate to these girls and their story.…

Alexander begins as far back as to when indentured servitude was as a sense the beginning of slavery, explaining how the growth of commercial farming of cotton and tobacco started a widespread epidemic for the need of cheap labor and therefore slavery came to be. Furthermore, Michelle begins to develop ideas around how American Indians where seen as savages to whites and seen as a threat in numbers while Africans were a continent away and didn’t interfere with voluntary immigration. Farther into the chapter, Michelle describes the social and political structure of slavery and how it has developed over the course of several decades through the use of the Three-Fifths rule and The Civil War, to the point of Jim Crow and to the state of American today with bias of criminal propensities towards African…

The books, “The Life of Olaudah Equiano” and “The History of Mary Prince” give first-hand accounts of slavery and how it affected them physically and emotionally. Slavery is as abhorrent as its proponents. In these books one can see the contrast between African and European slavery and how they justify it, the illusion of freedom some slave owners instilled in their slaves and how the term inferiority is used by the different types of slave proponents. But past all of this we also see how slavery can deteriorate human being in a short period of time. African and European slavery are very distinct but they still hang on to the main idea of owning a human being.…

    Summary Of Racism By Rony

Rony begins with an excellent chapter documenting the pervasiveness of racism in nineteenth-century scientific thought. Race was an evolutionary category, with Anglo-Europeans representing the peak of evolutionary achievement and nonwhites occupying a supposedly less evolved, “savage” position. This is one of her main points. Racism is all about who is the “other” and how they appear to “us.” She specifically talks about how race as we know it is a color configuration (p.10).…

In this captivating and convincing narrative, based on a nine-year-long investigation, Teicholz shows how the misinformation about saturated fats took hold in the scientific community as well as the public imagination and how recent findings overturn these beliefs. She explains why the Mediterranean Diet is not the healthiest, and how we might be replacing trans-fats with something even worse. This startling history demonstrates how nutrition science has gotten it so wrong: how overzealous researchers, through a combination of ego, bias, and premature institutional consensus, have allowed dangerous misrepresentations to become dietary dogma. With eye-opening scientific rigor, THE BIG FAT SURPRISE upends the conventional wisdom about all fats…

Then this week we were also asked to read chapter one of “Landscape and Race in the united States”. Jane Elliott left a powerful message in her experiment of understanding racism. By segregating individuals by eye color, she was able to prove a point that would change the lives of the individuals participating in the study as well as anyone who would watch it. I believe that racism is a major problem in this country and with small steps, like Jane Elliott’s, racism could be eradicated from our world. Although I have never believed to being racist, Elliott changed the way that I understand individuals of different races. I now am able to look at it in a whole new perspective.…

For a while now I’ve been meaning to share my thoughts and opinions with the world around me, but each time my fingers skim the surface of my laptop my heart rate speeds up, my throat tightens, my palms begin to sweat and all I can think about is the possibility that I might be the only person feeling the way I do. With that said, as I sit and share my thoughts in my dimly lit room, I do so with no intentions of offending anyone who might read this. To be honest, I do not expect many to read the thoughts that I will convey today. I share these thoughts merely as way for me to make sense of all that I have experienced over the past few months and to mentally prepare myself for all I will be facing in the future. While you may not know my name,…
