Black Lives Matter is a relevant social movement that is misunderstood unjustly and faced with many problems such as media coverage and opponent groups and the American police force.
On the Black Lives Matter website, they state “#BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society.” (BLM) Now compare to that to the definition of the Civil Rights movement “… an era dedicated to activism for equal rights and treatment of African Americans in the United States.” (“Civil Rights Movement, The” Roy). Obviously these two are different in their own rights but there are some connections. There are people today that believe the Civil Rights movement has not ended because of the current state of social justice in the United States. One reason why BLM and the Civil Rights movement are similar is because of the way people have protested. Similar to the march on Washington and Selma, most of the protests via BLM have been peaceful marches. There is a very huge misunderstanding that people do not understand about Black Lives Matter ‘s purpose. The movement is not saying that ONLY black lives matter. They emphasize many times on their website that they just want justice for black lives. LGBTQIA+ POC also suffer with justice, because people who are LGBTQIA+ still struggle with the heteronormative society that is still present, even though the right to marry is universal. They have that plus them being a POC. Nowhere on their site does it say that all lives don’t matter. BLM emphasizes that, “We are committed collectively, lovingly and courageously working vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension all people.” (BLM) Again, nowhere does it say that only black lives matter and no one else’s. Many misunderstand and are quick to shut down BLM with All Lives Matter or even a less frequent Blue Lives matter. Blue Lives matter represents the people who are in support with the law enforcement. There are many bumper stickers with the American flag that is all black, with a single blue stripe which is the symbol for Blue Lives Matter. Supporters of All Lives Matter say that all lives matter because they think they are being inclusive.
