There’s a remarkable and outrageous racial disparities in the criminal justice system. According the research Black lives Matter: Eliminating Racial Inequity in the Criminal Justice System by Nazgol Ghandnoosh, a recent investigation of the rates at which the Boston Police Department observed, stopped, interrogated, frisked, or searched individuals without making an arrest found that blacks comprised 63% of these police-civilian encounters between 2007 and 2010, although they made up 24% of the city’s population. Moreover, this study states; “Once arrested, people of color are also likely to be charged more harshly than whites; once charged, they are more likely to be convicted; and once convicted, they are more likely to face stiff sentences – all after accounting for relevant legal differences such as crime severity and criminal history.” A research table made by Bonczar T named Prevalence of …show more content…
Why are minorities, especially Blacks being treated so poorly by our police officers? No-one can truly answer this question without being the officer himself. Why did officer Yanez feel threatened so fiercely by Philando Castile? After all, Philando followed the officer’s command and did exactly as he was told, yet it didn’t protect or save him; he is dead and will no longer be there to watch his daughter grow into a woman and the stereotypes associated with it. Americans are fully aware that one cannot choose our skin color, just as we cannot choose our parents or the family we were born into. Despite this much known fact, there is still racial bias that overrides our common sense and logic. According to Kia Maksrechi in the article “What the data really says about police and racial Bias”, the only thing significant in predicting whether someone was shot and killed by police was unarmed was whether or not they were black. Crime variables did not matter in terms of predicting whether the person killed was

These are only five cases that are known, so many more may exist. At what point do we call to action the officers meant to protect us? Police brutality disproportionately affects African-Americans more than any other racial group in America. An FBI study of “justifiable homicide” shows that from 2005-2012, white officers used deadly force against a black person almost two times a week. Of those killed, one in every five was 21 years old or younger.…

The information is how it is because some officers are afraid of anyone that doesn’t look like them. because Barbara Armacost from Harvard Business Review, states in her article, “The Organizational Reasons Police Departments don’t change,” “Studies have consistently found that police view black suspects as more threatening than white suspects, they are more likely to expect blacks to be criminals, and they expect violence when patrolling black or minority neighborhoods.” (1). “While some part of this disparity may result from intentional discrimination, it also results from deeply entrenched, unconscious racism affecting the way police officers perceive potentially dangerous circumstances” (1). Armacost shows that the preconceived notion is that blacks are thought of as dangerous and threatening and discrimination is the…

Americas “fear of crime” has developed an incarceration binge, resulting in a disparity within America’s prisons, largely, affecting the underclass; dishonored groups caught in a symbiosis of the ghetto and prison, meaning, that ghettos have become more like prisons, and so undermined the inmate society, as such, turned prisons more like ghettos; hence, has redefined citizenry via racialized criminal vilification, and therefore, developed a state wherein the criminal justice system is the instrument to control the poor (L. Wacquant, 2010). Largely, because of socioeconomic forces manufactured by powerful elites through purposeful institutional arrangements that are pivotal to the prison disparity. Inevitably, because of societal isolation,…

I have had the worst task in the world; teaching my children how to interact with police so they would not be killed. This was especially vital with my sons. They have seen how black men have been treated by the police and I wanted them to survive and learn from their experiences. One thing that has been hard to understand is that throughout history, African-Americans have long been targeted as the race that “needed to be put in their place.”…

One of the most talked about topics in the news and throughout the public is, are police officers more hesitant to shoot minorities than they are to shoot white suspects. This is a great question in today’s society because America has the highest firearm to owner ratio in the world which means every police officer must be vigilant when confronting suspects. Also with the recent events, such as riots, looting and protesting, that have taken place due to the fact that police officers have shot and killed multiple African Americans within the last couple of years. There can be differential involvement, individual racism, and/or institutional racism. First and foremost African-Americans and Hispanics are differentially involved in crimes and they tend to commit more crimes. Their criminality is tied to the fact that these groups more often suffer from poverty and unemployment. Second, some of the disparities are due to the individual opinions or prejudices of individual police officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, probation officers, parole officers, and parole board members. This individual racism consists of prejudicial beliefs and the discriminatory behavior of individual criminal justice authorities against African Americans and other minority group members.…

That doesn’t seem to quite add up with the theory of law enforcement agencies being racially biased. The Department of Justice recently concluded an examination concerning the Newark, N.J., police office, which it found to have more than once disregarded the racial equality of Newark 's black residents. The proof? Studies found that while blacks represent 54 percent of Newark 's populace, they represent 85 percent of pedestrian stops and 79 percent of arrests. To know whether 85 percent of…

Prejudice or racial tensions have become a fore fronting scapegoat for police brutality. Individuals have accused police officers and vice versa of being racists and treating them of lesser quality as other races. “Although black men make up only six percent of the U.S. population, they account for forty percent of the unarmed men shot to death by police this year.” (Kimberly, Fisher, Tate, Jenkins) That means that African-American males create a little over half of the population shot by police officers this past year.…
