Racial Disparities In The Criminal Justice System Summary

There’s a remarkable and outrageous racial disparities in the criminal justice system. According the research Black lives Matter: Eliminating Racial Inequity in the Criminal Justice System by Nazgol Ghandnoosh, a recent investigation of the rates at which the Boston Police Department observed, stopped, interrogated, frisked, or searched individuals without making an arrest found that blacks comprised 63% of these police-civilian encounters between 2007 and 2010, although they made up 24% of the city’s population. Moreover, this study states; “Once arrested, people of color are also likely to be charged more harshly than whites; once charged, they are more likely to be convicted; and once convicted, they are more likely to face stiff sentences – all after accounting for relevant legal differences such as crime severity and criminal history.” A research table made by Bonczar T named Prevalence of …show more content…
Why are minorities, especially Blacks being treated so poorly by our police officers? No-one can truly answer this question without being the officer himself. Why did officer Yanez feel threatened so fiercely by Philando Castile? After all, Philando followed the officer’s command and did exactly as he was told, yet it didn’t protect or save him; he is dead and will no longer be there to watch his daughter grow into a woman and the stereotypes associated with it. Americans are fully aware that one cannot choose our skin color, just as we cannot choose our parents or the family we were born into. Despite this much known fact, there is still racial bias that overrides our common sense and logic. According to Kia Maksrechi in the article “What the data really says about police and racial Bias”, the only thing significant in predicting whether someone was shot and killed by police was unarmed was whether or not they were black.
