Racism In The 21st Century

During high school, every student must learn the chilling history about the people who were forced to be slaves, the civil rights movement, and everything in between. The thought that people were killed because of their skin color is truly mind boggling, and thinking about how different things are now, it doesn 't seem like it could ever be as rough as it was in the past. But, throughout the years, things have changed, and African Americans now have the basic human rights that they deserve. However, within the past five years, people have been arguing that racism is alive more than ever, and that things haven 't changed at all from the past. Of course it may seem that way, considering technology has advanced, and small acts of racism are broadcasted …show more content…
The irony in all of this, is that people are fighting for something that is not even the most life threatening situation. Although cops killing innocent people IS an issue, in 2015, there were almost 6,000 blacks killed by other blacks. In contrast, only 258 blacks were killed by police gunfire that same year. (Bandler 4) By not even realizing the true concern, people of color are killing each other instead. With the media focusing on one topic that concerns others, people get angry and want to change what is happening. But, the reality is, people lost sight of what is right and need to follow what Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” (King) Adding to this, the media has created diversity between people and is not focusing on the real issues. Furthermore, people of color should disregard the majority of media reports and focus on loving each other and growing a bond that can 't be broken, just like how it used to be. However, killing each other is not the answer, and fixing that first would resolve many problems. Then, standing together as one unit to fight the rest of the concerns would be easier, considering everyone would be on the same page. Ultimately, the brainwashing of the media is tearing people apart, and what needs to be focused on first should be advocated more to the people of this

Blacks are feeling targeted more than ever right now. In just 2015 alone, fatal police shootings are approaching 400. In fact the Washington Post says, “There is a raging debate about the police using deadly force against minorities. Although half the victims from 2015 were white, the numbers of unarmed victims were two-thirds black or Hispanic.” (Kindy 1)…

The black community have dedicated a disproportionate number of violent crimes and assaults on officers that could lead to deadly encounters with law enforcement. [Richmond Times Dispatch, 2015] Virginia state reported killing 31 blacks over the past 14 years, just one less than the 32 whites that were reported killed in confrontations with officers over the same period. The data, show that police officers in Virginia Beach are more likely to kill black offenders for reasons other than attacking police officers or civilians or for resisting arrest than they are to kill white offenders for the same reason. A group known as Black Lives Matter has been created to combat police brutality against minority men and to exclaim these lives should not be taken away or put in harm’s way simply because of the pigment of their skin. However, according to the media, this group has caused more harm than good (McClain, 2016). Not only has it caused a divide between police and minorities but it has also caused a divide between minorities and Caucasian Americans. The riots, while they bring exposure to the incidents, they do not actually change anything. The public perception of something that started out as a positive initiative has quickly shifted to a facilitator of racism.…

A lot of these controversies have caused Riots, the Rodney King Story, Racism and bias in the workplace/school systems, segregation and plain old stereotypes. There are so many developments that arise in the public because of racial stereotypes and bias. The media never really helps with this train of thought. The media can make today 's youth corrupt on their idea of how other races really are.…

It’s not difficult to see how racism is seen today. Or to see how much coverage that takes place when something has happened in public races. Charles M. Blow said, “Racial inequality is not a trendy issue; it is an entrenched issue”, in his article, “The State of Race in America.” Even before the 2000’s racism has always been an important topic including slavery since the early 1900’s, racism hasn’t changed as far as it not existing as it is. In an article, “In The Black Lives Matter Era...,” by Erin Aubury Kaplan she explains that there isn’t enough discussion towards the devaluing of black people that perpetuates bad policing descends from slavery and that the national trauma from that is too often passed by as a terrible past but then it’s an isolated event in time that is done, over with and only tangentially bearing on our national consciousness now.…

When you have unarmed people of color shot by police officers or found dead within custody, something which has been going on for years, it is institutionalized racism. It is tyrannical, unlawful inequality and power over citizens. It is getting away with manslaughter. It is citizens not just punished, but killed for the exact same crimes police officers commit. It is a blatant cry for a massive reform of the police department and justice systems.…

Statistics show that cops killed twice as many white people as they did black people in 2015. There has been so much chaos going on about the “Black Lives Matter” movement and it is undoubtedly starting to get out of hand. I, myself, do not agree with any of the uproar due to the fact that we have soldiers dying for our citizens to have equal rights and there are multiple black people kneeling during the National Anthem, random cops getting shot, and rather than uniting America, it is only further dividing the races within our country in many ways. First off, we have many young adults enlisting in the army and others with family members putting their lives on the line. We also come by African Americans who take a knee during sporting events while the National Anthem is played to protest against “racism” in our country.…

Young African-American men were nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by police officers according to a Guardian study that recorded 1,134 deaths at the hands of law enforcement officers in 2015. Despite making up only 2% of the total US population, African American males between the ages of 15 and 34 made up more than 15% of all deaths logged this year by an ongoing investigation into the use of deadly force by police. And then police departments across the country have the nerve to act so violently to peaceful protests, no, this must come to an end. For veterans of the wars Ferguson protests so closely resemble, the police response has appeared to be not only heavy-handed but out of step with the most effective ways for both law enforcement and military personnel to respond to demonstrations. “The police are standing with bulletproof vests and rifles pointed at people's chests,” said Jason Fritz, a former Army officer and an international policing operations analyst.…
