Racial preferences have become such a norm in society today, we do not even acknowledge the signs. What most Americans believe is when segregation ended, so did racism. However, in reality animosity toward people of different color, was still being implanted as core family values. In this affirmative action brought about by the University of Michigan awarded 20 points to any student from a low-income background, regardless of race. However, these points could not be combined with those for minority status. This meant, poor blacks did not get awarded 40 points. Essentially, this was a preference for poor whites. Then again, Michigan awarded 16 points to students who originated from the Upper Peninsula of the state. This is an area of made up mainly of whites. However, based on economic status and even geography, both preferences are fair. As in the above paragraph, this is another case of failing to recognize the presence of institutionalized racism. Talented black students are unable to score good points because of their living conditions, race, and economic status. All the privileges that are granted to the whites have embellished preferential treatment that favors the whites.
