Conversations in the United States regarding racial inequality between blacks and whites are incredibly divisive. That is logical because one side must blame, while the other rebuts, and vice versa, until the discourse resentfully ends and no progress has been made. The chasm on opinions exists because whites are fundamentally incapable of understanding the plight of blacks unless they are well-educated. However, it’s difficult for whites to be well-educated, in context, given that the historical narrative being taught across the country is intentionally void of critical information regarding the black experience. Therefore, whites remain oblivious to the black struggle unless they either have intimate relationships with blacks who enlighten…
Racism has turned our society into one full of hate and discrimination based of skin color and cultural beliefs. Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. We have created a society in which people who are born into lower classes are unable to climb the social ladder and reach an elite economic status. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…
We as a society have come a long way since the beginning of racial inequalities, which includes slavery, the Civil War and emancipation, civil rights movements and to a current state of racial and cultural turmoil. The real question is have we really made any progress throughout time to create a better society and equal social system? In today’s society, it is a common occurrence to see those of color being arrested, lacking jobs, living in poor environments, and involved in violent acts which includes recent shootings. Prior to the civil rights movements and Jim Crow laws, any white person could easily discriminate against another person of color. Unfortunately, in our current day and age people have neglected these laws and found ways to…
History that is still affecting the world today. Racism and how it still causes so many side effects to the world, and the people who reside in it. How though? Well, everyday we constantly profile everyone around us. Either it being their looks, actions, sex, and even race.…
Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…
There is no hiding that in modern society, individuals are not equal. They are criticized, neglected, and taken advantage of due to various factors such as race. Communities may say that inequality was abolished long ago, however, the truth is that inequality is still here. Leaders, assorted articles, and various events in recent history have come to prove this anti diverse world. They share their anger, their thoughts, and their fears of racial inequality, hoping that one day it will soon change however, it hasn’t.…
This movement has helped bring attention to the fact that racism is still a huge problem in society. For example, some may argue that we live in a post-racial society because slavery is no longer a problem, but this isn’t true because inequality among black people is still seen every day. From bias against black job applicants to police brutality involving unarmed black males, it is crystal clear that we are still struggling to move forward and see past the color of people’s skin. Although this movement is yet to make a noticeable difference in society, its activists have heightened the awareness of racism in America and are on their way to ending the injustices associated with it. While some say that this movement is causing society to regress because it hasn’t made a huge impact on society yet, it is important for them to take into account that the movement is incapable of removing racism overnight and that they are doing all that they can to deal with this problem that is bigger than themselves.…
Systemic racism is racism that impacts social institutions, structures, and social relationships in our society. Many people deal with systemic racism. Some examples of systemic racism are of the following: the wealth gap, employment, housing discrimination, government surveillance, and incarceration. In both The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas and A True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, each specific character deals with at least one of those and much more. Systemic racism is a big disadvantage for those that are categorized as minorities.…
CLAIMSMAKING What is the definition of a social problem? According to Joel Best, a social problem is anything that takes place within a society that is considered an issue and affects people as a whole. It isn’t recognized as a problem unless society feels the need to acknowledge it as one. Therefore, it is a condition that harms society that must be acknowledged in order to be an issue. As I began to research what I wanted to do my paper over, I reflected on the multitudes of things happening in the United States of America.…
Through the various discussions in the class, I’ve heard comments about how the concept of race has caused problems of dividing people, whether as exclusion in history or as an inclusive way to address a group’s inequalities. Race has come up multiple times as a controversial term that is socially constructed showing the negative roles people have had in society. I feel that each time I hear about US history, when race comes up, it brings up pessimistic tensions that have further split the country. Race is important in the US; we see this with the past problems of inequality and the sparks of the Civil Rights Movement, along with the current struggles of uproar in our neighborhoods with various racial groups coming together to take a stand in our political situations. Race relation is one of the most important problems facing the US, where young, unarmed black men are killed by officers.…
To prevent history from repeating itself, society typically reflects on past mistakes to learn from them. However, the issue of race inequality remains as active as ever, especially in Louisiana. Race inequality is ultimately stymying society by dividing people and creating a distinction in social classes. Its detrimental affects can define a place and prevent it from flourishing. Louisiana possesses an unspoken system that perpetuates its roots of race inequality as seen by the segregation in Mahalia Jackson’s “Recollections of Early Childhood”, the education system, high incarceration rates, and Deborah Luster’s…
Twenty fourteen will be the year this is made clear to everyone: racism is not simply personal prejudice/bigotry that only manifests in the form of being unkind to someone on the basis of their skin color or calling them a derogatory name. Racism is a system of oppression, one that creates a society of first- and second-class citizens by denying rights and access to resources to non-white people. Racism is a system of power created by and maintained through public policy. Racist rhetoric or action is anything that reinforces/upholds that system. So until the day comes when the US government enacts laws aimed specifically and purposefully at ensuring that white people are shut out of education/healthcare/jobs/housing and shuttled into prison…
The lives of American Americans have been shaped in many ways especially the community. In American Apartheid: Segregation and the Making of the Underclass by Douglas S. Massey and Nancy A. Denton and The African American Urban Experience: Perspective from the Colonial Period to the Present by Joe Trotter, Earl Lewis, and Tera Hunter used several scholars and data to understand urban poverty and segregation experienced by African Americans. However, both readings explore the different interpretations of urban poverty and segregation. For instance, American Apartheid is more about analyzing poverty and segregation within the context of the economically consequences it caused for American Americans. While, the African American Urban Experience…
A scholar named Cornel West wrote about race inequality and how different barriers can make it difficult to climb the social ladder. He pointed out that many African American live in poverty despite having a strong work ethic and that barriers to success are not solely the result of economic issues. He argues that we will only overcome the barriers to success if we stop focusing on a single area of the problem. These barriers can also be applied to gender, class, and other areas of diversity. These barriers can be divided up into two categories, personal barriers, and social barriers.…
Racism has been around for many years and it is an issue that has never been fully resolved, although some may believe that it has. It is not uncommon to see crimes being mentioned everywhere but thanks to the media, we have seen the many incidents occurring recently involving white cops and black men, hence we have come to realize how racist we really are as a society and how big of an issue racism actually is even now. In the textbook Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, we are introduced to some of the first sociologists and their theories. Two sociologists that are relevant to present issues about racism would be Emile Durkheim and W.E.B. Du Bois.…
