Definition of Racism Racism is a “product of the complex interaction in a given society of a race based worldview with prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.” Racism is an unequal treatment used on people based on their skin color. It is often associated with the skin color, which distinguishes from a specific race or community. Racism has an effect on people lives. Although racism takes place in every race, African Americans (blacks) experience the worse. Racism has played a psychological effect on African Americans communities, this effect takes on a huge role in the progression of Blacks as a race. In 2014, my friend Devon and I were driving out of a parking lot in Culver City, Ca. Devon pulled out in front of a police car; he did not see the car coming. After driving a few blocks down the cop turned on the sirens and Devon pulled over. The officer yelled “Get out of the vehicle, now!” and as the officer approached us, he had already had his weapon drawn. The officer told Devon to put his hands behind his head, he then put cuffs on Devon’s wrist. As soon as the cuffs were on…the officer’s gun hit my friends head. The officer screamed and yelled out the word “nigger” repeatedly. Devon was taken to the back of the cop car where he was yelled at some more and then released. Till was originally from Chicago, but he was visiting his uncle out in Mississippi. After reportedly whistling and flirting with 21 year-old Carolyn Bryant, a white woman married woman, Till was kidnapped and killed. Several nights after speaking to Mrs. Bryant Till was kidnapped by Bryant’s husband and his brother. The two men brutally beat and mutilated Till before shooting and sinking his body in the Tallahatchie River. Racism is still alive in the 21st
