“Everyday Use” by Alicia Walker is a short story that correctly shows the main message contained in rock song ‘rolling stones’. The singer wrote that “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need.” The story explores the struggle of women in African-American society with racism and identity during a certain bad time of history. It shows more disagreements between siblings. Alicia writes about the return of Dee to the home of her mother to claim some handmade quilts that she believes would perfectly decorate her new place. Dee is portrayed as knowledgeable and intelligent while Maggie is reserved and gentle. Dee possesses a beautiful appearance and lighter skin while her sister feels less of her personal reflection, being too aware of her scars and dullness. Maggie is loyal and affectionate while Dee is thoughtful and too judgmental. In fact, Maggie is seen as a person of weaker qualities while Dee is stronger. The pair presents a perfect case study for needs and wants. Maggie can be seen as a person more happy with life after being able to meet individual needs in life. As a result, she is the one to inherit her mother’s position who only reached elementary school. In Mama’s opinion, the best Maggie can hopefully achieve is marriage to John Thomas, a guy known for his unattractive teeth and mean face (Everyday use, 13). Mama has already fixed the life she expects for her young daughter saying that will fail to become a person; she will get lost into a life of caring for children and farm work just like her husband.
