Discrimination Against Minorities

One issue that still seems to be quite a problem in the United States is racism and discrimination against minorities. Even though the civil rights movement was a while ago, and we as a country have made progress since then, it is still something we see and hear about almost every day. In a perfect world, I believe we should all be treated equally regardless of how we look on the outside, or what religion we follow. I think eventually most of all racism will die out, but there will always be some individuals who are stubborn and refuse to treat others as equals. While American has always been a mostly white country, every year more and more minorities are coming to this country, and soon enough, whites will be the minority. It has been proven that a majority of racism comes from a lack of education. There is still quite a bit of ignorance when it comes to other races and ethnicities. Some people tend to go by stereotypes they hear, and treat others unfairly because of that. It is common for rural areas, especially in the South, to have more bigoted and racist views. These areas, coincidentally, also often poor education and large …show more content…
This is when the “black lives matter” movement started, after numerous black men and women had their lives taken by police officers. After this, there seemed to be a war with African-Americans and cops. America was divided on this topic, some believing that cops were genuinely racist, while others believed the murders were justified, and police were just trying to defend themselves. Unfortunately, we will never truly know what happened in many of these cases. Even with devises such a police body cameras, sometimes they aren’t always reliable and it isn’t easy to tell exactly what was going on. It is hard to draw the line between a cop who is truly racist, and one who is just trying to do their job and protect the public from dangerous

Preceding the post World War period, undisguised discrimination against Mexican Americans had disseminated amongst the Southwest regions. Often classified as substandard to American society, individuals of Mexican ancestry were underrepresented as constituents in the board of jury. In Jackson County of Edna, Texas, for the last twenty-five years, any individual attached to distinctive indicators of Spanish heritage such as a Spanish surname were denied admittance into serving jury. Consequently, a lack of representation from peers in the court of law was demonstrated in the case of the accused, Pete Hernandez in the murder of Jose Espinosa in 1950. The judicial system’s inbuilt partiality against minority classes is also displayed…

The death of someone close remains a hard thought for me to fathom. I cannot help but to sympathize with the people close to Michael Brown, an 18 year old, shot by a policeman in Ferguson, Missouri. There is a line between protecting oneself and abuse of force in an authoritative position. Whenever possible, a policeman should take actions to preserve a civilian’s life. Darren Wilson, the officer who killed Brown is guilty of police brutality, but did not commit a hate crime.…

Festinger developed a cognitive dissonance theory that exclaimed people feel uncomfortable with inconsistency in their actions and morals and will work to either alter their actions or their opinions to reconcile this dissatisfaction. Avoiding scenarios that exacerbate these feelings is a tactic used to reduce dissonance. Many factors influence how much power this dissonance has over someone. I will be addressing cognitive dissonance and critical thinking issues related to racism and police brutality.…

“Black Lives Matter” Movement & Police Brutality As much as the subjects of “Black Lives Matter” and police brutality are getting stale and cliché, unfortunately it is still an issue that will not be corrected by hushed complaints and sweeping under the rug. However, this problem is not brand new; it has only escalated. Racial discrimination began in the times of slavery and has been an issue since—well forever. The discrimination has been toughest on minorities—like the African-American community. Along with the racial discrimination from society itself, some police and law enforcement figures have often abused their power and taken advantage of their place in the majority race.…

Being a cop is a moral challenge because you can easily plant something on someone you don’t like and send them to jail just like that, or, you can simply not make that choice and be a Good Samaritan and do your job correctly. As slaves were freed in the U.S., it is clear right off the bat to them that in their lifetime they will never be treated equal and every person not of color made it clear to them…

Discrimination towards Hispanics is so big that there are at least 130 American towns and cities that prohibits the hiring of unauthorized day laborers, making it illegal to even rent houses for them to live in and they criminalized the public use of languages other than English knowing that English is their second language, if they even speak English (National Park Service, 1). To show how much America wants to cease the immigrant flow to the United States, immigration enforcement takes up half the nation's law enforcement budget and the border patrol personnel has doubled since 2004 (Porter 1). One of the most inhumane unimaginable things happened to a Hispanic in 1948, when a Latino soldier - Felix Z. Longoria was killed in action. Longoria…

Racism has existed since the early 1600s when African Americans were first brought to America against their will to work as slaves. It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Movement, beginning in 1955, that the lives of African Americans started to transform and the U.S. Supreme Court began to terminate “Jim Crow” laws and ban segregation (“Civil Rights Movement,” n.d.). The main goal of eradicating segregation was to reach what is known as “racial equality”, which is the balance between all the races making everyone equal. Since the Civil Right Movement, our country has continued to make steps of improvement including, swearing in our nation’s first black president and the fact that black people and white people are now able to go to the same school.…
