I took the race IAT, and the result that I have a moderate automatic preference for White people over Black people. From this test, I learn that I might have a racist tendency toward African Americans over European Americans. This might not be a surprise because all human beings have some kind stereotype or racist tendency toward a particularly group of race or culture. Racism exists for many racial and ethnic groups. Especially for me, I resided in a neighborhood that consists of mix races of Africans American and Europeans Americans. I might have more negative experiences with African Americans so that’s might be the reason why the test shows the result that it did. However, I do treat every race equal respect because I believe that’s the

The history of violence against African Americans in the South is long, tragic and varied. While this history is made up of many different forms of extra judiciary violence, I would argue that off these acts the lynchings carried out during Jim Crow were some of the most heinous and politically impactful. Seeing brutal images of a town gathered around a hung body provide those studying the political history of the American South with a vivid depiction of what systematic disenfranchisement really meant. These acts of group violence were carried out to maintain the political system of white supremacy. The two states with the highest rates of lynching per capita during the Jim Crow era are Mississippi and Arkansas.…

Racism can be far more delicate and tricky, and many people of different races face this informal, everyday racism more often than we think. Racism occurs everywhere in politics, schools, at the park, on TV the list can go on forever. When “Black Lives Matter” is being chanted it is so much more than moment in history, it is a movement. This movement goes beyond the extrajudicial killings of black people by police and vigilantes. It brings attention to the problem of systematic racism within the United States and within the police department. It started off with the shooting of Trayvon Martin but goes into so many other occasions where black lives are being deprived of basic human rights and of their dignity. It has been documented that Non-white Americans make up less than 38% of the United States population, but minorities make up two-thirds of all unarmed people killed by police and it has been shown many times, within the last year even, that a black american is more…

For centuries, the treatment of African Americans has been a crucial focal point of American society. Since the Triangular Slave Trade in the early 16th century, white people and author figures have continued to assert their supremacy over African Americans. At the ending of slavery, acts like the Jim Crow Laws and the Grandfather Laws further suppressed blacks’ ability to truly be concerned as true citizens. Although discriminatory actions have been deemed as unconstitutional, today we are still faced with a major maltreatment and oppression of African Americans. Cases like Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Trayvon Martin make it extremely hard to ignore the fact that minorities are targeted for harassment every day.…

Many classroom discussions that have revolved around BLM tended to center around reformism and “acceptable” forms of protest that should be used to facilitate change. The emphasis on respectability politics and voting also dominate these conversations. These moderate methods are presented using language that tries to paint the methods as being radical and revolutionary. As Alicia Garza explains thoroughly, the dehumanization and malicious mistreatment of Black people is rooted in various methods of state violence. State sanctioned violence tends to be either painted in a manner that suggests that it can be remedied through reformism, or it’s ignored on a whole.…

He directly calls out the Republican Party for ignoring undocumented works because it was in the best interest for their supporters to have cheap labor and the Democratic Party ignore it because they needed the votes. I am not sure if Trump is aware that undocumented immigrants tend to not go out to the ballot every two to four years. In this book Trump seemed to be more concerned with insulting and berating Latino immigrants than actually making a valid argument. He writes, “According to a Government Accountability Office 2011 report, America’s prisons house 351,000 criminal aliens who committed a crime after having already broken the law by entering America illegally.” He does this in an attempt to frighten the reader into thinking all undocumented people are 1) Latino and 2) Criminals.…

Demographers have warned that in the near future, non-Hispanic whites will be a minority of the US population. In states like Texas or California, and in hundreds of cities and counties, the future has arrived. For many Americans, the election of Barack Obama, which was partly made possible by the growing strength of non-white voters, marked a momentous moment in that country's racial history. But for some whites, the election of the first black president was also a powerful symbol of its decline in American society.…

I know that I am biased towards both groups in different areas, but I felt nervous before taking the test. I think that was because I thought it would make me feel like a bad person depending on my results. I know that I am not an inherently bad person based on any test results, but the idea of having concrete results made me a bit nervous even though I know I am situationally biased. After the test, I was disappointed by my results.…
