It is 2016, each and everyday people are fighting for their rights, and no human on this earth wants to feel worthless. Harriet Jacobs (1861) stated, “But everywhere I found the same manifestations of that cruel prejudice, which so discourages the feelings, and represses the energies of the colored people” (p. 144). This quotes backups the point of the discouragement most black people felt as they were slaves listening to the ones who “owned” them. Throughout any community traveled in the United Sates at the time, everything remained the same. Most wealthy white Americans had slaves in their households to do the work that they may have been too busy for. For African Americans at the time walking through the streets and constantly being reminded that they were not welcome was a tragedy. This relates to Linda because as she was fighting her way to find freedom and get the word out about racism, she was constantly thrown will challenges. People told her she would not succeed just because of her skin tone, and it was hard getting help sometimes because people look down upon others that were like exactly like them. The main character Linda had exampling that they were not allowed to do most of the things that white Americans were allowed to do. This brings back of the topic how African Americans were stripped of their identity as humans and put at slaves instead. There were very few people in the United States that wanted to help the blacks’ get their freedom back; however, the ones that did help made a huge impact on history. Racism has raised many eyebrows, and many concern were brought to attention during this era. With the author successfully fighting through it and publishing her book, readers have learned many core concepts.
