Arguments Against Racism In America

Racism is something that has been around before our generation even began; something that goes on in every part of the world. “Laziness is a trait in blacks,” says presidential candidate Donald Trump. Bill Clinton said, A few years ago this guy would have been getting us coffee,” referring to President Barrack Obama. Some may question why exactly is this still a problem in a nation where we have an African-American president. How could there still be so much racism going on? People have formed a hierarchy of one another based on one’s skin color. Some may think just because of one’s skin color that makes them either privileged or disadvantaged. As a nation we have focused too much on one’s skin color, hair, and facial features, rather than who they are as an individual person. …show more content…
When you’re born or as a young kid you don’t look at another kid your age of different skin color and think “I don’t like you because you aren’t the same color as I am”. In fact, that is the least of your thoughts. Racism is something that is instilled in you, typically as a younger child. Racism is something that is constantly put upon someone as they are growing older. Parent’s will to young children “You don’t want to play with him he’s different that you” or “it’s not safe to play with him look at his skin color.” As a child you get gratification from making your parents happy and do not want to see them mad at you so you listen. Once one is old enough they have this hatred and dislike of every race but their own, but they can never reasonably explain why. Parents will teach their children that they should only date people of their race, saying it’s wrong to want to date someone of another race. Then the pattern continues on for generations. Even leaders that people look up to are making racist remarks to the public. It’s hard for something to disappear if our leaders of the country are acting

Our society is like a statue, they both need the proper structure needed in order to keep it steady, but when one piece does not fit, then they will both topple down. Although statues may not relate to the problem, racism can relate to the one piece that does not fit, and this problem is explained in the articles " Black Men In Public Spaces", by Brent Staples, and " Is Everyone A Little Bit Racist" , by Nicolas Kristof. These articles dive into the topic of how racism affects everyday lives and how detrimental it is to the society and the people within. Also, it shows the unfortunate story of a victim of racism. Unless changes are made, racism will rule supreme in communities and there will be nothing for people to stop it.…

Movie Character Analysis: 42, The True Story of An American Legend In 2013, a director named Brian Helgeland came out with a movie called “42”, an inspiring, true story about the life of Jackie Robinson and his role in breaking baseball’s color barrier. The story begins in the mid 1940s, when Major League Baseball was a “white’s only” sport and african americans could only play in a separate league by themselves. In this film, legendary Brooklyn Dodgers manager, Branch Rickey (played by Harrison Ford) brings a new, unorthodox opinion to the table. He wants to bring in an african american baseball player from the Negro Leagues, to come play for the Dodgers and to eventually break down baseball’s unspoken color barrier.…

Others perception of my whiteness is mutual, although I can recall during grade school, having red-hair sparked people to assume I came from Irish lineage. This quick assumption from others exemplified how easy it is to judge and label others solely on extrinsic appearance—much like the plight of people of color—deemed inferior if seen as having “even an ounce of blackness”. “For whites, the process of racial identity development is typically far slower than for people of color. As the dominant group in the United States, whites too often have the luxury of remaining behind a veil of ignorance for years, while people of color begin noticing the difference in which they are viewed and treated early on” (Wise 2011:27). Because of wealth gaps, white children tend to be raised in racially homogenous communities and schools—thus gaining little to no exposure to anyone who is not white (Wise 2011:27).…

Racism has turned our society into one full of hate and discrimination based of skin color and cultural beliefs. Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. We have created a society in which people who are born into lower classes are unable to climb the social ladder and reach an elite economic status. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…

“Is Racism a Permanent Feature of American Society?” takes the reader into a deep debate between two scholars. Derrick Bell believes racism will be an everlasting problem faced by African Americans in our society; and Dinesh D’Souza believes the exact opposite. He believes other factors occurring in the society affects blacks and the problems they hold racism accountable for. Derrick Bell argues his point by starting off addressing slavery. He states, “Slavery has left a significant portion of the race ‘with life-long poverty and soul-devastating despair..”…

Racism has been an ongoing struggle in society for centuries. The common misconception is that racism ended when Martin Luther King Jr. and many other civil rights activists led their way to “victory” with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination against race, religion, sex and more in public places. It also eliminated segregation in public places such as schools and restaurants (“Civil Rights Act (1964)). Many people believe that the end of legal segregation is the same as the end to racism.…

Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools, workforces, and other places where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is as bad as it was many, many decades ago. An individual cannot be born racist but only learn to be one as they grow into adulthood. It is the racist caregivers that raise the children that instill racism into them. Racist parents will keep their kids from the kids of the opposite race, putting it into the kids minds that they can only play with kids of their color; Exhibiting this raises them into adulthood being a racist.…

I am judged on the character of my skin, the appeal of my features and the perceived notion of how I should carry myself. In America, today we are still facing long-term effects of racial segregation and unwavering influential sense of supremacy. Society is expected to fit into a blanket black or white category, and for those that fall into the middle of both said categories we are expected to choose to which side we will identify ourselves as. There is no room to choose to whom you will be, no room for you to grow and decide for yourself. The ability to judge yourself solely of the appearance of yourself is only self-evident and the ability to decide you who you are based on your morals and values is nonapparent.…
