Racism: Accelerating Aging Among Minority Groups

Decent Essays
The domain of sociology which fascinates me is the sociology of health and illness, and how social factors can influence our mortality rate. I am especially interested in studying the health and wellbeing of minorities such as women, indigenous groups as well as immigrants and how they are disadvantaged in living a healthy life? Such as examining the effects colonialization, discrimination along with racism have had and continue to have on the health and well-being of minority groups. I am also interested in examining whether or not racism is accelerating aging among minority groups. I would like to focus my research prospectus on studying health system interventions or policies which are having a positive outcome on preventing chronic diseases

In chapter 2, of Essentials of the U.S Health Care System, Shi and Singh both talk about focusing on determinants to improve health. Having adequate health insurance for everyone is a great start to improving one’s health, but the bigger issue is addressing the needs of the people who have low income or the needs of different ethnic groups. In the documentaries, Bad Sugar, Becoming American, Collateral Damage and In Sickness and In Wealth, they all touched on social determinants. It did not matter if you lived in the United States, a third world country or a reservation; they all expressed a need that can better their health.…

Race and health outcomes are heavily correlated and attention to the two needs to be considered. Racial classification has a profound impact on daily life experience and societal perceptions. Racism is a factor in health issues, barriers to receiving medical attention, and the quality of services and care provided. I liked how the article divided the framework for understanding racism into three levels: institutionalized, personally mediated, and internalized. Institutionalized racism often manifests as inherited disadvantage; Internalized racism is defined as the stigmatized races of negative messages about their own abilities and intrinsic worth; and Personally mediated racism are prejudices and…

It is especially important to examine this topic because of the diversity and uniqueness of every individual. No matter the race, there is bound to be some level of prejudice, and every race has some level of power, no matter how big or small the quantity may be. The power can come from socioeconomic status, culture, and genes according to Jones’ article (Jones C, 2000). This means that people from any race have the ability and capacity to choose whether they receive health care based off these conditions. As every individual from across the spectrum, health care is vital and a must in order to prevent and care for illness.…

Jason Butler 3/9/17 SOC100 Discussion #8 It is a common problem, especially in American society today that many racial minorities and individuals possessing low social statuses have poor health as well as shorter life expectancies. This is a result of socioeconomic disparities. Due to many factors such as poverty, lack of healthcare, and poor diet, those individuals described above often have poorer health and shorter lives as they are not able to access healthcare thus leading to illnesses in which can get out of control and lead to a shorter life expectancy. Other factors such as poor diet often lead to poor health as those individuals are not able to eat healthy often eating those foods that are cheaper…

For many years there has been a tremendous gap between health related diseases among the different racial groups. For example, some of the health diseases argued and researched over the years include: cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. In America, research has always led to the fact that black African Americans tend to have a higher mortality rate than those that are white. However, throughout the studies of racial inequality between health there is a question that comes into place as to whether or not "fundamental biological differences" is a cause of the health related problems that some people get. Through research it is shown that biological differences isn't a leading cause in the different health issues among race, social economic…

Many researchers have identified health disparities the goal is look at the the cyclical pattern that ultimately results in widened disparities in health care between minority groups and the majority and in continued discrimination of minority group( e.g., Buki, Borrayo, Feigal & Carrillo, 2004; Clegg, Li, Hankey, Chu, & Edwards,2002) . According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states there is inequality in the quality of care given. For example if a white person suffered from a cardiovascular disease and a person of color suffered from the same thing would they received the same treatment? With health disparities healthcare becomes bias because society tends to aid the white person first and better versus the person of color. The first definition of health disparity was found in September 1999, Director Harold Varmus that worked for the white house was charged with creating a…

    - The racism that arises from these stereotypes has permeated the health care systems in several ways. The first is in the inability to see that Indigenous people continue to suffer from residential schools and the ‘sixties scoop’. Additional and extensive support for these groups is still needed in order to reach an “equal” healthcare system. The second is in the neglect and withholding of health services because of race (Ambtman-Smith Lecture 9). 2.…

Polly, Health disparities follow when population groups experience higher burden of illness injury, death or disability than another group “(p7). Disparities arise across many dimensions, including race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, location, and gender, disability, and sex orientation (WyniaRomana & Anne, 2012). Health and healthcare disparities matter because not only does it face disparities, but it also limits overall improvement in quality of care and health for a broader population (Jr., 2016) As the population become more diverse, with people of color project to account for half of the population in 2045, it is increasing important to address health disparities now (WyniaRomana & Anne, 2012) Many people are disproportionately…

Healthcare is more than just the care that you receive in a hospital. Poverty, lack of employment, and lack of housing all fall into that category. And all racial bias can and does take part in these implements of health. It seems people are hesitant to claim that there is healthcare discrimination. Some of the leading causes of death include heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, homicide, hypertension, and liver cirrhosis; African Americans have higher death rates than whites in all of these categories.…

In this essay, I aim to guide you into the thinking that racialization in healthcare does exist and takes various forms through the following examples: structural violence and the racisms effect on health disparities, the manifestation of race as a social construct that limits out understanding of individual experiences, and how the human biology is static and too complex for race to define. As mentioned above, structural violence plays an important role in the perception of racism and racialization in the healthcare field. The term defines harms caused by social forces and its underlying causes include political and economic inequalities as well as racism, sexism, and homophobia (Koch, Lecture Notes). This is almost completely synonymous with the term health inequalities which refer to the disproportionate opportunities and resources in disadvantaged groups in society and the world at large (Erickson &Singer, pg.26).…
