There is more to racing than going around the track or pushing the gas pedal through the floor. Denny, a race car driver, learns through his driving experiences many valuable life lessons. Racing is not just about who can push the pedal through the floor, but who has trained and put the time needed to be a successful racer. A good racer must train so that he has the skills to outlast the other drivers, and a racer who trains and learns all there is to learn about racing will be the one to succeed. Denny’s diet is very strict because to be a good racer one has to be disciplined in all they do. Denny devotes his life to racing, but he still makes time so that him and his family can live a happy life. In Garth Stein’s, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Denny learns life lessons from racing that apply to one’s life. Accidents are things that one cannot control, and one must learn to accept these and learn from one's mistakes. A driver must not panic, but he must react.
