Alice Walker wrote The Color Purple in 1982. I have not read this book, but I have seen the movie based off of this book. Before doing this project I knew that the book was about the hardships of African Americans during the early 20th century. This book was set in times of racial tension. The story starts in a rural area of Georgia in the 1930s. This book focuses on the struggles of an African- American woman named Celie. Celie and her sister have been raped by their “father”.Celie marries a man named Mr. who also rapes Nettie, Celie’s sister.Mr. has a love interest named Shug who has a sexual relationship with Celie.Nettie runs away with a missionary family going to Africa.Samuel and Corrine adopt two, kids Adam and Olivia. Nettie and Corrine become friends, but thinks Samuel and Celie have had a relationship because the kids look like Celie. When Corrine falls ill, Samuel tells them about the kids adoption process. This book has been banned since then in 2013. Alice Walker died two years before the book was banned in 1984. This book has been, challenged, banned, removed from libraries, and retained all across the United States. Most schools recently have banned the book because of language, violence, and sexual content.
I think The Color Purple should not have been banned. Alice Walker is known as a controversial author because of this book. This book, though graphic, is a necessity for understanding events in past time. The book is not written to be graphic, but to show what happened during this time period.
