Cops not getting in trouble for the crimes they committed makes it seem as if the black lives of the men who were killed had no significance. Without consequences it almost seems okay to go around shooting carelessly but that only applies because these cops are white individuals. If there was equality, then the cops would have the appropriate punishment for their actions and there would be further investigations on what actually happened rather than dismissing it as just another crime. Aside from that perhaps Du Bois would have suggested that a way to end white supremacy would be if everyone had a voice and fought against it. Society as a whole would need to acknowledge the privileges that white people have as opposed to the rest of society. As for Durkheim, racism against black people was not a topic he focused on but his theory on crime is especially accurate today. The increase in crimes like Alfred Olango’s has caused an outrage among the black communities. But in many protest we also see several white individuals standing up for black lives. This is interesting because both communities are trying to come together and fight for the same thing. Even the white people, which are seen as the ones responsible in the killings of black men, are contributing their part in fighting for equality and justice by protesting along with the black community.
