Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

Minorities have always been represented poorly in television. Typically, in television shows, the main roles are dominated by the white male. We usually do not see the main characters played by minorities or women. If we do indeed see a minority is a show, the role that they play is typically a small stereotypical role based on their race. For example, in many shows we see Indians that play doctors, cab drivers or even shop owners, which is very stereotypical in society today.…

The politics of representation encompass the way in which we, as a society, view the outside world. The media uses this as a way to form what can be a biased and most of the time a misinformed on race, culture, religion and as well as country. As media is a driving force of our everyday lives we often do not question it as it is seen as a reliable source. Leading sources such as Fox News have established a reputation in which viewers despite being extremely biased deem them believable. Representation is also seen in television shows and films, which also educate us in a sense but mostly stereotypically.…

The main characters in television shows ethnicity are mostly white, which leads to controversy, incorrect perceptions, and a battle over certain ethnicities role on a television show. Travis Dixon, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, revisited this core controversy in a 2015 study published in a Communication Research, and found out that, “Whites were more likely to be portrayed as police officers in television (73%) than to be employed as officers in Los Angeles and Orange counties (53%). There is a lack of adequate diverse representation in the media (logos). The media does not portray people of color in the media enough—and when minorities are cast or depicted in films, commercials, and other forms of media, they are limited to an overplayed and annoying (and boring) stereotype or filler trope (ethos). Although Hollywood films and other media industries may recognize that there is not enough diversity in their films, there are still little to no changes being made. Roles written for minorities almost always go to white actors (and God forbid that be reversed) and stereotypes are still being enforced. It is the 21st century: Google is free, and so is communicating with people of different cultures.…

They may argue that the stereotypes are intended to be comical and are exaggerated on purpose. They may argue that people should not believe that stereotypes in the media are what define a group in its entirety. For example, in the article “Race and Ethnicity in Entertainment”, Pat Cooper says that “he believes that the "activists" who condemn stereotyping simply need to develop a "sense of humor" about the issue, and stop assuming that one negative portrayal reflects badly on a whole community.” However, what may be funny to some people may not give the same effect to others. Many people may not appreciate the stereotypes depicted in television shows and may become offended by…
