Racial Slurs Should Be Illegal

Everything is funny until it's about you. This can apply to many common racial slurs used in the United States today. These statements are not confined to just whites to blacks; they can be the opposite or any combination of races. Racial slurs are inappropriate and derogatory and should never be used on another human being, although interfere with our freedom of speech. One statement in the U.S. Declaration of Independence says: “All men are created equal” (Declaration). The civil rights movement was an effect to many African American slaves being mistreated and considered below the white race. This was not only inappropriate to treat them this way, but was also a direct violation of this powerful saying. Numerous people emigrate from other countries to America because our country is expected to provide a safe environment in which to live. A specific example that we see commonly in Idaho can be a Caucasian person using the Mexican race as a degrading insult to another being due to incompetence or stupidity. These slurs are used commonly, therefore resulting in us not realizing the impact that statement had. Our obliviousness is shown through survey conducted last year: “50% of blacks believe black Americans face significant discrimination. Only 16% of whites agree” (Blake).
