In her book The New Jim Crow she talks about how America has never actually got rid of the racial caste system. Instead we have switched the ways in which the constitution speaks about it. Jarvious Cotton is a man whose family of men have faced racial discrimination in America. His great-great grandfather was unable to vote because he was a slave. His great grandfather was beat to death for attempting to vote, and his grandfather did not vote because of the intimidation he faced from the Ku Klux Klan. Now there is Jarvious Cotton. A man whose rights have been taken away from him because he has a felon title that is permanently engraved into his name. Now like the other black men in his family he is unable to vote. In addition to voting he is discriminated against in the work place, getting public benefits, having a jury, housing and other areas. Racial profiling has caused minorities to fear that if they get pulled over by a cop that they will not leave that encounter alive. A large section of America expresses how they feel that African Americans overreact in these situations, refusing to acknowledge the violent history that has followed the community for past, present, and future times. A white person will never be able to fully understand what it is like to experience the effects of racial profiling.
