Racial Profiling Advantages

There is no hard evidence that shows that racial profiling is a good counterterrorism measure. Racial profiling is a tool used by the government that is logically flawed. Just because certain types of crime are mostly committed by a particular group does not mean that individuals from that group are likely to commit a crime. Race alone is not enough to assume that a person will commit acts of terror. A more efficient way to fight terrorism would be to use profiling that is based on criminal activity and not race. Behavioral patterns or psychological characteristics would be better, more relevant indicators of who would be more likely to commit crimes. At an airport, for example, there are expectations of how a typical passenger behaves, how a family behaves, and even how air crew behaves. All three alternatives would satisfy the criteria of effectiveness in one way or another. Looking into a person’s, or group of persons’, behavioral patterns can be more effective than simply using race to suspect someone of possibly committing a crime or wrongdoing. It would be more useful to study certain behaviors. For example, if a person is visiting a particular place often and at unusual times of the day, being suspicious of their actions would be more reasonable than being suspicious because of the color of their skin. Using the COP would also be an effective measure since it focuses on proactive policing rather than reactive policing. It encourages law enforcement to work together with the community instead of working against it.
