These ideas have become so natural that they are always implied when talking about a certain race. Society has created an idea that white is automatically associated with good.In the article, Passing in reverse, the writer Krissah Thompson uses the source Derald Wing Sue, a professor at Columbia, to describe how “In this society, people would prefer to be identified with the race that is least stigmatized...it baffles everyone when it goes the other way.” The Dolezal case shows that people still associate black with disgracefulness which is why this cause so much confusion on why Dolezal would do this. The main cause of racism are stereotypes that have been created throughout generations. In the case of Rachel Dolezal, many black people are offended because she based all of her experience of being “black” off racial stereotypes that are demeaning to the black community. In the article Washington football fans as guilty of cultural appropriation as Rachel Dolezal, the writer, Kevin Blackstone, uses the comparison of the harmfulness of using american indian mascots due to their negative implication about the native american community to the misrepresentation Dolezal has caused for the black community. He states that “the disrespect Dolezal has shown for black culture and identity is the same that appropriating native symbols and imagery for a team sport has shown for native people.” In both of these situations, stereotypes are used to represent a race. The experiences Dolezal describes as being black are all driven by stereotypes.She used these ideas to create a mantra about herself when in reality she was truly being a racist. Although she refuses to deny any claim to lying about her past and her experience, all of what she described was based on racism thoughts caused by stereotypes.
