Racial profiling is an even larger problem today and continues to create conflicts by contributing to the overall amount of discrimination throughout the country and reinforcing the racial barriers that have been built over time. Although racial profiling is intended to lower crime rates, according to Jesper Ryberg, Racial profiling is marked by racism and attributes negative attitudes and beliefs about different racial groups (13). Even if racial profiling is effectively decreasing the amount of crime in the US, it is not worth the additional discrimination and racism that comes along with it. The use of racial profiling reinforces general stereotypes and leads to the belief that these accusations are just. These accusations are then used in other contexts within society among the general population. This causes the spread of racial stereotypes which increases the recognition a specific stereotype receives therefore, influencing the public to believe certain attributes belong to certain racial groups and creating an overall negative portrayal of that group. Many people do this on a daily basis and the majority of them might have no idea they do it at all. Whether it’s a true belief, for comical effect, or just simple ignorance, all of us at one time or another has been involved in the discriminatory act of stereotyping. In today’s day and age stereotyping is so common that it is for the most part ignored. Most people are oblivious to the negative effects of stereotyping even though the majority of it is racially centered. From social media to television, stereotyping is in almost everything for the purpose of comedy. What many people don’t realize is that racial stereotypes are a form of subtle racism. These everyday occurring remarks are also known as micro aggressions. Micro aggressions have become so common in our society that many people do not know what they are or how they affect the racial barriers. Even if micro aggressions do not always have an obvious effect they are considered a great source of stress that can also cause other health related problems (Burrows 639). According to Anthony L Burrows, the effect of racial micro aggressions changes based on how an individual interprets and reacts to these stressors. A big factor in this reaction is race.
